The NYU Gallatin School of Individualized Study is a model of individualized education. Founded in 1972 and named for one of the founders of NYU, Albert Gallatin, NYU Gallatin is located in New York City, in the heart of Greenwich Village, one of New York’s most historic neighborhoods.
Gallatin’s graduate students are as diverse as the concentrations they develop. The MA Program’s student body is composed of recent college graduates, students interested in changing the focus of their careers, as well as professionals seeking to enhance their existing expertise. What connects our students is their motivation, independence, and intellectual curiosity that allows them to shape and direct their own course of study.
Gallatin students work closely with faculty advisers to design an individualized concentration. Our students take the majority of their courses in the various graduate schools of NYU and may pursue other learning experiences, such as independent studies, tutorials, internships, and private lessons in the arts, through which MA students may receive academic credit for their studies in New York City’s performing or visual arts studios.
The MA program at Gallatin culminates in the master's thesis. This final product may take the form of an extended research paper, an artistic work, or a professional project. In each of these formats, the student displays what they have learned through the program in a rigorous, creative, and masterful piece of work.

The Gallatin Graduate Student Organization (GGSO) is the primary student organization at Gallatin dedicated to graduate student life and advocacy. The GGSO plans events for the Gallatin community, including theater outings, happy hours, Study Saturdays, and hangouts. They have organized visits to the Brooklyn Brewery, a volunteering series with New Alternatives LGBT advocacy group, peer networking events with the career services center, and writing retreats.
Gallatin students involved in the arts regularly take part in theatrical productions, concerts, dance productions, and gallery exhibitions, many of which take place in Gallatin’s theatre, The Jerry H. Labowitz Theatre for the Performing Arts, and in The Gallatin Galleries.
The Gallatin Arts Festival (GAF) is an annual week-long, community-wide celebration of the unique artistry and interdisciplinary scholarship of students at the Gallatin School. GAF features student work and serves as a springboard for action and discussion through the creation and presentation of work and ideas. A Gallatin MA student created the Gallatin Arts Festival as part of his master’s thesis.
