Dechets a L'Or (DalO) is a social venture that seeks to improve waste collection and management in Growing cities of Sub-Saharan Africa. We see the potential for social and economic benefits through helping cities get a handle on their waste problem. Our service will upgrade or fill in the gaps in existing waste collection systems and deploy waste management technologies that are appropriate to local context. By improving these systems we will improve public health, increase economic viability in cities, and obtain fertilizer, energy, and recyclable material. Our focus is secondary cities, cities with populations of 50,000 to 1,000,000 inhabitants. While traditional waste collection services in Sub-Saharan Africa views waste as a nuisance to be disposed of, where waste is collected and dumped away from households, with limited to no waste management. DalO takes a more holistic approach to waste, we start by partnering with existing waste collectors or deploying waste collection service where necessary, to educate communities on waste sorting, essentially – Organics, Recyclables, and Inorganics/Non-recyclables. Next we establish standards regarding service delivery to local customers to ensure that collection schedules are respected. Finally, we deploy a system of waste management, which starts by partnering with existing local consumers of recyclable goods and supplying them whenever possible. Next, keeping in mind the scale at which we operate we deploy either a composting or anaerobic digestion system to manage the organic waste. Lastly, inorganic/non-recyclable waste is disposed of, options other than land filling will be explored whenever possible. Our approach seeks to be a real solution for growing cities by being both scalable and cost effective in order, we believe that our approach will result in a significant increase in the percentage of waste collected, while reducing the amount of waste abandoned in or around cities

Our Mission: To change how cities in sub-Saharan Africa view their waste. Through innovation on waste systems in small and medium-sized African cities we will improve the environment and community health, create jobs to reduce poverty, provide fertilizer to farmers, and energy to businesses.
