The Episcopal Church is seeking to hire an experienced professional to be its next Director, Human Resources.

Background: The Episcopal Church is a mainline Protestant denomination based in the United States with 108 dioceses in more than twenty-two countries and territories.  A part of the Anglican Communion and descended from the Church of England, the Church preaches the teachings of Jesus Christ in its sermons, missionary work, and outreach across the world. The Episcopal Church has a legacy of inclusion, with women and men serving as bishops, priests, and deacons.  Laypeople and clergy cooperate at all levels, and everyone is welcome, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation.  

The Church is governed by its General Convention, a bicameral body of the House of Bishops and House of Deputies, meeting every three years, and the General Convention is ultimately responsible for establishing the standards and principles which guide the Church in its work. The Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society (DFMS) is the corporate body of The Episcopal Church of which the Presiding Bishop is the Chief Executive Officer.  The 170 staff of the DFMS are responsible for performing the missionary and programmatic work for the Church.  The Director, Human Resources, working for the DFMS, ensures that these individuals have the appropriate HR support so that they can carry out their work successfully.  

The Position: The Episcopal Church is seeking a skilled professional to be its next Director, Human Resources.  Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director is a critical member of the leadership team and supports the mission, values, and culture of the Church through strategic management of its human resources function.  The Director provides guidance and professional expertise to the Executive Leadership Team on all matters related to Human Resources and will be responsible for recruitment, benefits, employee relations and all other HR functions. 

Candidates must be adept leaders with an ability to develop colleagues aligned with organizational values of accountability and autonomy. Most importantly, this position plays a critical role in employee relations and is typically relied upon to identify issues or concerns and bring them to resolution in collaboration with the leadership team. 

The Director, Human Resources must be a highly intelligent self-starter with a proven record of accomplishment who has a commitment to The Church’s mission and values,  and its organizational development goals. The Director, Human Resources should have substantial experience in managing human resources for a complex organization, preferably for a mission-driven organization.  They will possess excellent speaking and writing skills and be able to communicate successfully and persuasively within the organization, as well as to legal counsel when necessary.   

The Director must have high emotional intelligence, be a creative problem solver, an outstanding listener and communicator, as well as be strategic and analytical.  The successful candidate will be highly organized, diplomatic, possess sound judgment and relationship building skills as well as honed interpersonal skills, and maintain a sense of humor under stress.  

Specific Responsibilities include:

Organizational Development

·       Provide organizational development strategies and direct human resources management to partner and support the mission and ministry goals of The Episcopal Church.

·       Manage and direct the activities of the Human Resources department, ensuring the adequacy and quality of organization-wide staffing, recruiting, retention, compensation and benefits, diversity and equity policies and protocols, payroll processes and platforms, regulatory compliance and third party vendor relationships (e.g. brokers, insurers).

·       Lead the human resources department team to enhance their skills and increase productivity. Provide direct supervision to the Senior Officer, Human Resources, and the Manager, Benefits, Systems & Finance.

·       Work collegially with other management team members.

·       Leverage HRIS software enabling the agency to operate in an efficient, fully digitized state with real-time data.

·       Maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and modern technologies in human resources, talent management and employment law.

Employee Relations

·       Create and implement employee relations policies and practices that increase employees’ job satisfaction and morale.

·       Build processes, and handle questions or complaints from employees in a timely and professional manner that inspires employee and management confidence and meets regulatory requirements. 

·       Address management-employee relations, e.g. absences, health matters, conduct, communication, conflict, grievances, organizational change, separation.

Talent Management

·       Build resources for managing staff and talent acquisition.  Motivate new employees through the onboarding and training of new hires.

·       Evaluate the use of consultants and freelancers, and where there is excess expense and overlap with staff functions.

·       Lead and execute robust staff onboarding, career development, performance evaluation, succession planning, and retention programs.

·       Develop and implement compensation processes appropriate to the Church, and communicate to employees about compensation, benefits, and other facets of their employment.

·       Create ongoing training and development programs that provide skill development and professional growth opportunities for employees.


·       Ensure compliance with federal, state, and in-house regulatory requirements and procedures.

·       Oversee internal corporate culture and employee engagement (work rules, incidents, announcements, morale).

·       Provide risk management support to the organization.

Qualifications: The successful candidate for the Director, Human Resources position will have the following minimum qualifications and attributes:

·       Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related field required, a graduate degree or SPHR/PHR certification a plus;

·       10+ years’ experience in a human resources department, particularly in organizational development and leadership coaching;

·       3+ years’ experience in a HR leadership position;

·       Strong understanding of the hiring process, compensation, performance management, employee relations and other HR functions;

·       Prior experience with HRIS modules. Adept at analyzing data, developing appropriate HR metrics, and reports;

·       Ability to serve effectively in a multi-class, multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, and international church;

·       Excellent communication, leadership, and planning skills. Active listening skills with the ability to build a positive rapport and trust with staff;

·       Skilled in conflict identification, management and resolution and a high level of emotional intelligence;

·       Sound professional judgement and ability to maintain confidentiality;

·       A dynamic relationship builder, both with individuals and groups. Capable of managing difficult situations with tact and diplomacy;

·       Adept at navigating the new realities of the modern workplace including an understanding of the current societal challenges of mental health issues and burnout; and

·       A commitment to the mission of The Episcopal Church.

Other information:

·       The anticipated salary range is $130,000 to $160,000 per year, plus benefits.
