The Research and Science Portfolio in Program

Pew's Research and Science portfolio supports and produces rigorous, relevant, and objective research and reporting which is fundamental to the success of the organization and to stakeholders and decision-makers around the world. The portfolio works with teams across the institution to help ensure all Pew's research is methodologically sound, accurate, and high-quality and serves as a centralized hub within Pew for specialized research and technical skills. Research and Science manages Pew's scientific grant and fellows programs which support innovative biomedical research and marine science, and oversees projects that provide valuable research and information to decision-makers and the public, support a culture of evidence, and build bridges between researchers and stakeholders.


A project of the Pew Charitable Trusts based in Washington, D.C., Stateline reports on state and local issues. In addition to publishing original content every weekday, Stateline collects state and local stories from around the country for its daily newsletter and produces special reports, such as its annual State of the States series. Stateline's readership includes thousands of state officials, policymakers, business leaders, journalists, students of state government and ordinary citizens. The content appears at www.pewstates.org/stateline; the stories also run on news sites and in newspapers around the country.

Position Overview

The Associate I will serve as an associate production editor who works to fact-check and copy edit stories while serving as our lead graphics producer. This person will support the four other editors and 10 reporters by creating and overseeing the production of graphics, selecting photos and verifying permissions, fact checking and copy editing stories, occasionally reporting and writing stories, and producing a daily newsletter. The Associate I will work in Pew's Washington, D.C., office and will report to the Project Director, Executive Editor, Stateline.


  • Serve as Stateline's liaison to the Pew communications team on story production, graphics creation/production and corrections. Exercise judgment on which elements of the production pipeline to prioritize, with minimal supervision.
  • Work with reporters to conceive of graphics. Suggest options for data display.
  • Organize, manipulate, and code complex data in Excel and Pew's custom mapping tool to produce visualizations to accompany stories.
  • Conduct research for stories.
  • Choose photographs for use in Stateline stories and verify permissions.
  • Assist occasionally with copy editing and regularly with fact checking Stateline stories and graphics.
  • Produce Stateline's daily newsletter; make editorial judgments including headline writing.
  • Manage Stateline's story and board deliverables databases; recommend and execute changes to database designs as data sources, data quality, and priorities evolve.
  • Keep track of federal, state and local policy developments and suggest ideas for Stateline coverage.
  • Occasionally report and write stories.

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required.
  • A minimum of one-year relevant experience in areas such as journalism, data collection and analysis, or graphics.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in the use of the Microsoft Office suite of products, especially Excel and Word (including track changes).
  • Outstanding organizational and time management skills; ability to handle several projects at different stages simultaneously and a strong capacity to track details.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills (including proofreading).
  • Flexibility to work as part of a team or independently to meet goals. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.


Minimum domestic travels is expected.
