The New Jersey Attorney General’s office is looking for an attorney to function as a Section Chief for the Government & Healthcare Fraud Section of the Affirmative Civil Enforcement Practice Group for the Division of Law in Newark, NJ.  The position will be appointed as a Deputy Attorney General 1 with a salary of $116,045.41 to $162,458.13 per year.


ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:


The Attorney General has broad oversight of the state’s legal and law enforcement matters. As the head of the Department of Law & Public Safety, the Attorney General supervises a wide range of Divisions, Offices, and Commissions, consisting of over 2,800 sworn law enforcement officers, 600 attorneys, and thousands of other public servants.


ABOUT THE SECTION:


The Government & Healthcare Fraud Section (“GHF”) of the Affirmative Civil Enforcement Practice Group conducts large scale civil investigations and litigations in federal and state court on behalf of the State of New Jersey and its agencies to enforce the New Jersey False Claims Act (“NJFCA”). Whistleblowers who detect fraud against the State file qui tam lawsuits against government contractors and grantees, which GHF investigates, and where appropriate litigates, to bring wrongdoers to justice. GHF also initiates civil NJFCA investigations and prosecutions when the State itself suspects fraud by providers of goods and services or grantees. The GHF Section has handled matters involving fraud alleged in the provision of environmental testing services, education services, transportation services, financial services, prevailing wages, and pharmaceutical manufacturers and other providers of healthcare goods or services. GHF is dedicated to holding those who defraud the State accountable, oftentimes in concert with the federal government and other states across the nation, to protect New Jersey’s taxpayers and fiscal. 


DUTIES:


Under direction of the Director, Chief of Staff, Deputy Chief of Staff, Division of Law, or other supervisory officials within the Department of Law & Public Safety will:


  •  Assign and supervise the work of other deputies in the Section
  • Supervise and work with the Assistant Section Chief in managing the deputies;
  • Manage and participate in the Section’s pending investigations and litigations;
  • Plan and manage the operations of the Section;
  • Evaluate the performance of and conduct case file reviews with deputies in the Section; 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or required.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor.
  • Admission to practice as an Attorney-at-Law in the State of New Jersey is required.
  • Five (5) years of experience as a practicing attorney, two (2) year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.  


OTHER KEY FACTORS:


  • Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey.
  • The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in handling labor enforcement matters, experience handling complex civil affirmative investigations and enforcement actions, and/or demonstrated legal writing ability. Preference will also be given to candidates with at least seven (7) years of litigation experience, with at least three (3) years of such experience in a supervisory capacity. 
  • Candidates should submit a supplemental document, included with your resume, outlining (a) litigation experience in State and Federal court; and/or (b) investigation experience.
