The New Jersey Attorney General's Office, Office of Justice Data, is looking for a Data Miner to join its team. This position will be in Trenton, NJ. The salary for this position will fall within the range of $62,836.72 to $89,042.11. Title and salary offered is non-negotiable and will fall within the range posted.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

The Attorney General has broad oversight of the state’s legal and law enforcement matters. As the head of the Department of Law & Public Safety, the Attorney General supervises a wide range of Divisions, Offices, and Commissions, consisting of over 2,800 sworn law enforcement officers, 600 attorneys, and thousands of other public servants.

ABOUT THE DIVISION:

The Office of Justice Data coordinates data collection and analysis across the Department of Law and Public Safety, ensuring the Department meets various statutory obligations. With a particular focus on criminal justice data, OJD promotes transparency and accountability through timely and accessible public data releases. Working with other criminal justice and law enforcement stakeholders, OJD helps to ensure that the office’s policymaking is rooted in data and rigorous statistical analysis.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

Under the close supervision of a Research Data Supervisor or other supervisory official in the Office of Justice Data (OJD):

  • Complete work under critical timelines to meet project objectives and deadlines;
  • Knowledge of data analysis methods and techniques including the gathering and collection of structured and unstructured data, as well as general principles, concepts and terminology used in research;
  • Research, compile, and analyze structured and unstructured data from new and existing sources.
  • Knowledge of data analytical software used to prepare summaries, reports, charts, graphs, and tables;
  • Conduct research and analyses, prepare data visualizations, and statistical reports

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience.

  • Six (6) years of professional experience in collecting, analyzing, reporting, and disseminating large volumes of data using statistical techniques to identify trends or patterns in complex data for research projects; including or supplemented by 18 credits in social sciences, criminal justice, statistics, or a closely related field.
  • OR Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, including or supplemented by 18 credits in social sciences, criminal justice, statistics, or a closely related field; and two (2) years of the above-mentioned professional experience.
  • OR Possession of a master’s degree in social sciences, criminal justice, statistics, or a closely related field; and one (1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience.
  • OR Possession of a Ph.D. in social sciences, criminal justice, statistics, or a closely related field.

"Professional experience" refers to work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the authority to act according to one's own judgment and make accurate and informed decisions.

OTHER KEY FACTORS:

  • Preference will be given to candidates with strong applied experience in R, SQL, Tableau, or VBA, or another statistical programming language or data visualization tool, especially in a government or criminal justice context.
