Director of Board Relations (School Board)

Job Summary: 

Under the direction of the Deputy Chief of Staff, the Director of Board Relations is responsible to maintain strong stakeholder relations across internal departments as well as inter-agency partnerships.  This role supports the Deputy Chief of Staff in leading the monthly Board Approval Process as well as leading the coordination of major projects for the Chief Executive Office.

 

The Director, Board Relations will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:

  • Oversee the monthly Board Approval Process, including approval of the CEO briefing agenda, resolving outstanding issues before the Board office deadline and leads regular Board briefings
  • Manage departmental briefings and follow ups and ensure timely delivery of materials to the Board Office and Board Members
  • Prepare regular updates to Board Members on departmental initiatives and news
  • Support the Chief of Staff and Deputy Chief of Staff in identifying opportunities to better align organizational design, resources, policy, systems and processes to achieve the CEO’s vision for the district 
  • Develop and lead the data analysis, root cause analysis, proposed solutions in coordination with the Chief Executive Office, Office of Portfolio Management, Office of Network Supports, Chief Operations Office and the Office of Early Childhood Education to identify proactive, innovative and cohesive enrollment strategies 
  • Lead the implementation of those cross-functional and interdepartmental strategies in partnership with the Communications, Marketing and Family and Community Engagement offices
  • Lead interagency partnerships with City Hall, Chicago Housing Authority, Chicago Department of Public Health, Chicago Parks District, Chicago Public Libraries, City Colleges of Chicago, Department of Family Support and Services
  • Resolve issues that arise across offices to ensure execution on CEO priorities
  • Meet with current and potential stakeholders  to ensure alignment to priorities
  • Lead planning and execution of special projects as required
  • Perform related duties as required 

 

In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the Director, Board Relations must possess the following qualifications: 

Education Required: 

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Master’s degree preferred

Experience Required: 

  • Minimum of seven (7)  years of relevant professional experience required
  • Minimum of five (5) years of project management experience required
  • Strategy and organizational design experience is highly preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Knowledge of Chicago Public Schools educational landscape; 
  • Knowledge of research-based best practices in school reform; 
  • Excellent technical skills including written, oral, and presentations, ability to communicate insights to a variety of audiences through reports, memos, presentations, and tools designed to increase information utilization at all levels of the organization;
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills;
  • Strong leadership and team-building skills; ability to focus a diverse group of professionals around a clear goal and then monitor progress towards that goal;
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and drive multiple projects concurrently, both independently and as a member of a team;
  • Proven track record of success and a clear focus on results;
  • High standards for performance and ability to maximize employee performance;
  • An unyielding commitment to continuous improvement and ability to use multiple sources of data to inform short- and long-term decisions.

 

Conditions of Employment

As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to:

  • Establish/Maintain Chicago Residency - Employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district. The Chicago residency requirement does not apply to temporary/part-time positions, however, all CPS employees must be residents of Illinois.
  • Be Fully Vaccinated Against COVID-19 - Unless approved for a medical or religious exemption, all employees are required to be up-to-date on COVID-19 vaccinations, including boosters, and to submit proof of vaccination to the district within 30 days of hire. “Up-to-date” on vaccination is defined as being at least two weeks past all primary vaccine doses and any applicable boosters. Unvaccinated staff with an approved exemption must submit to weekly testing.
