Job Purpose:         Implement automated testing solutions for products at Calbright, specify and design test plans for automated and manual testing regimes. Provide technical guidance.

Location:                 Remote, various locations throughout California

Position Overview

The QA Engineer will report to the Director of Information Systems and will be responsible for defining test specifications and plans and implementing automated tests and test harnesses/solutions for products that comprise Calbright’s core technology. Where necessary, these test plans and specifications will be used to define the automated tests, as well as manual testing activity.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities 

The duties below are representative of the role and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed within the scope of work.

  • Design and implement test plans and specifications
  • Build automated tests and test harness solutions based on these test plans/specs
  • Work with Product and Technology managers and staff to ensure that testing requirements are aligned to business and functional requirements
  • Define manual testing procedures that can be handed off to QA manual testing staff to execute
  • Perform triage and analysis of bug reports
  • Define and manage bug reporting systems, process, and metadata
  • Work with Product and Technology managers to prioritize and refine bug reports and test plans to ensure effective and efficient overall test executions
  • Perform other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience developing new tests and maintaining test suites in a modern language such as Python, Ruby, Javascript, C#, or Java (relying on appropriate unit test frameworks), mobile (iOS, Android or React Native). Ideally you have experience with more than one of these.
  • Experience developing and executing browser testing, using Browserstack, Sauce Labs, or similar.
  • Comfortable with git for version control, and have used Github for reviewing pull requests.
  • Ability to write test plans and test specifications that can be used as the basis for both manual testing and automated test implementation.
  • Experience developing and writing test plans for large software development initiatives, and working with stakeholders to verify signoff of delivered functionality
  • Demonstrate understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, staff and faculty.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BA/BS and 3 years in QA roles with 3 years in senior QA implementation roles


  •  7 years experience in QA roles with 3 years in senior QA implementation roles

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in a higher education environment and understanding of the structure of colleges/universities

Working Conditions and Travel

  • Calbright College is a statewide online college where all instruction and support are done via various online technologies both in person and remotely. Calbright College has administrative offices in Sacramento available for use. When working remotely, employees should be able and willing to use digital communication tools as used by the college, and have the ability to work on a computer for extended periods of time.

  • Requires the ability to function in a remote online instructional environment performing work of primarily a sedentary nature. Requires the ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Work is performed indoors where minimal safety considerations exist.
