Position and Grade: Internship – Banana Fusarium Wilt Single-Cell Mutagenesis

Organizational Unit: Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications Joint FAO/IAEA Division for Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture Plant Breeding and Genetics Section

Duty Station: Seibersdorf, Austria

Duration of Appointment/Start: 1 year, Summer 2022

Main Purpose

Under the overall guidance of the Laboratory Head- Plant Breeding and Genetics Laboratory, the intern will assist and interact with staff in the laboratory to establish protocols for Fusarium wilt resistance screening and in vitro single cell mutagenesis in banana. The intern will benefit from exposure to and hands-on experience with banana Fusarium wilt screening technologies, advanced in vitro technologies, and mutagenesis techniques in the laboratory in an International Organization environment.

Tasks / Key Results Expected
  • Assist with the development of bioassays for banana Fusarium wilt resistance screening
  • Assist in the development and mutagenesis of in vitro single-cell cultures of Cavendish banana
  • Contribute to the dissemination of research results, including the preparation of protocols for sharing with the FAO and IAEA Member States
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Experience with fungal biology and/or microbiology techniques
  • Experience with in vitro plant cell culture techniques
  • Good knowledge of biology and molecular biology
  • Knowledge of mutagenesis techniques for crop improvement is an asset
Qualifications and Experience
  • University degree in Biological/Natural Sciences or related fields
  • Working knowledge of plant pathology and/or in vitro cell and tissue culture techniques
  • Excellent written and spoken English essential; fluency in any other IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian) an asset.
Applicant Eligibility
  • Candidates must be a minimum of 20 years of age and have completed at least three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a first degree.
  • Candidates may apply up to one year after the completion of a bachelor's, master's or doctorate degree.
  • Candidates must not have previously participated in the IAEA's internship programme.
  • Excellent written and spoken English essential; fluency in any other IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian) an asset.
  • Candidates must attach two signed letters of recommendation to their application.
