Position Title: Vocational Specialist- Northern Santa Barbara County

Program:                           Supported Employment Program (SEP)


Position Summary

Under the direction of the Program Manager, the Vocational Specialist will carry out the services of the Supported Employment Program by assisting adults with mental illness in obtaining and maintaining employment that is consistent with their vocational goals and recovery.

The Vocational Specialist’s primary responsibility will be job development for consumers in the Supported Employment Program including: identifying and developing job leads consistent with the needs of the consumers and the development of employer worksites that can be utilized for external situational assessments and work Adjustment. The Vocational Specialist will also be responsible for educating and supporting clients in how to job search, create a resume and master application, prepare for interviews, obtain and maintain employment with a trauma informed approach. The Vocational Specialist will tailor employment services to each individual based on their needs for support. The Vocational Specialist will uphold and promote the program philosophy in all duties performed.


Hours/ Salary

Part-time, 20 hours per week. Anticipated hiring range is $18.00- $22.50 per hour depending on education and/or experience. Includes a generous individual benefits package.

(*Full Salary Schedule is $18.00-$25.00)


Minimum Requirements

BA/BS degree and 6 months of full-time work experience in job developing or mental health OR AA/AS degree and 2 years of full-time work experience in job developing or mental health; OR High School diploma and 4 years of full-time work experience in job developing or mental health. Awareness/ understanding of the needs of psychiatrically disabled population. Must include a resume and cover letter. English/Spanish bilingual a plus. Strong interpersonal skills, collaborative work style and oral/written communication skills. Well defined organizational and time management skills. Ability to work independently and flexibly. Able to deal effectively with a variety of people and personality types regardless of age, ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression or socio-economic level. Ability to handle intense situations, display good judgment and decision-making skills, and remain calm and clearheaded under pressure. Must have a strong commitment to the right and ability of each person with a severe and persistent mental illness to live in a safe living environment, develop a meaningful role in the community, and have access to competent and continuous supports and services. Must have a strong commitment in clients’ rights to self-govern and create their own choices and goals. Must use reasonable precautions in the performance of one’s duties and adhere to all applicable safety rules and practices. Conduct self in such a manner as to assure at all times, maximum safety to one’s self, fellow employees, clients, and other persons contacted through TMHA business. Conditions of employment include: Must be at least 18 years of age; possess a valid CA Driver’s License, reliable transportation, proof of auto insurance, and DMV driving record that meets TMHA’s current vehicle insurance requirements. May be required to utilize personal vehicle and auto insurance. Ability to possess and maintain good physical and mental health. Comply with a T.B. assessment (possibly a TB test if needed to confirm a negative tuberculosis result) and receipt of a criminal record clearance through fingerprinting. Must be able to successfully complete First Aid and CPR training.
