Hawaii Children’s Action Network (HCAN) is an independent, nonpartisan children’s policy and advocacy non-profit organization. Our mission is to build a united voice educating and advocating for Hawaiʻi’s children. HCAN engages, educates, empowers and mobilizes families, community leaders, and policy makers to improve the health, education, safety, economic security and development of Hawaii’s children. We provide information on child well-being, stimulate dialogue on children's issues, and promote accountability and action.

The Community Organizer works to build a group of leaders in the community to address the social and political problems families are experiencing. Core tasks include base-building to support/develop successful campaigns and win change. The Community Organizer finds, trains, supports and educates community-based leaders to recognize their own assets and build power. It also includes building relationships among community leaders and between community leaders and power holders.

The Organizer moves the base to action to address the systems and public policies they collectively want to change to improve the lives of children and families. This includes shaping effective, strategic campaigns.

I. Essential Job Functions

A.    Grassroots Leader Recruitment. Recruit new leaders through face-to-face outreach, personal visits, phoning; organize house meetings; plan leader activities; and build an effective, ongoing organization by increasing leaders’ involvement and investment.

B.    Leadership Development.  Training of grassroots leaders to develop skills, including: recruitment, facilitation, public speaking, organizational development. Create evolving roles for leaders and coordinate volunteers.

C.    Community Education. Educate and inform grassroots leaders and community members on our structural organizing model, develop activities to deepen understanding of the issues as well as the political landscape surrounding our policy campaigns at the state and local level.

D.    Direct Action Campaign Development and Implementation. Assist in development of campaign strategy and tactical plans; coordinate campaign activities and actions; represent and train grassroots leaders to represent the organization in campaign meetings with policy makers and media.

E.    Planning and Administration.  Assist in the development of plans for outreach and organizing, rigorous tracking and reporting of ongoing work and results, database maintenance and work planning.

F.     Training and Events. Organize and/or facilitate workshops, trainings, community events and meetings.

G.   Communication Materials. Assist in the development of communication materials including raps, fliers, social media posts, newsletters, fact sheets, pledge cards, etc. 

II. Qualifications & Experience Required


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.


Qualifications and Requirements:

·       Passion for the mission, vision, and values of Hawaiʻi Children’s Action Network, along with a strong commitment to equity and social justice.

·       Bilingual, BIPOC, LGBTIQ and other underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

·       Excellent communication skills

·       Ability to work with diverse people communities and cultures.

·       Hardworking, self-disciplined, and ability to work well under pressure. Ability to plan and manage work effectively and manage multiple projects.

·       Willing to work evenings and some weekends.  

·       Knowledge of the issues affecting keiki and their families

·       Deep connections to the Hawaii community.

·       Ability to motivate community members to take action.

·       Valid drivers’ license and access to a car.

·       Excellent interpersonal skills, community building skills, public speaking skills,

·       Attuned to community, messaging, and tone. Open to constructive feedback and able to quickly incorporate guidance.

·       Ability to work collaboratively with a team, and work independently

·       Well-organized and able to manage multiple tasks and projects at the same time.

·       Proficient in Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite applications.


III. Qualifications & Experience Preferred

 Listed below are qualifications that a strong candidate would demonstrate, but are not prerequisites to successfully perform this job.

 ·      Experience with canvassing and political organizing

·      Experience working with policy- or advocacy-focused organizations.

·      Knowledgeable and enthusiastic about current events, socio-political trends
