Organizational Overview:

Founded in 2000, the New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault’s mission is to prevent sexual violence and reduce the harm it causes through education, research, and advocacy.

The Alliance works closely with the city’s rape crisis programs and hospitals, college campuses and universities, District Attorney’s Offices, the New York Police Department, court officials, and city leaders to develop and implement best practices and policies, raise public awareness, and create sustainable change for survivors. Through training, advocacy and research, the Alliance has been an active force in fighting for recognition of the magnitude of the problem of sexual violence in New York City (NYC).


Position Overview:

The Alliance is currently in the process of restarting its operations and programming after a temporary shutdown in June. The Director of Programs position will work closely with the new Executive Director and play a lead role in the hiring of new staff, the development of organizational culture, and the design and execution of new and existing programming centered on the needs of the survivor community and the organizations that serve them.

The ideal candidate will bring to this position demonstrable experience in running outcome-oriented programming, developing innovative programming reflective of community need, and creating a safe, healthy, and supportive environment for their staff that is grounded in a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism. The candidate will be responsible for scaling up prevention efforts across four core programming areas: healthy nightlife, youth prevention education, statewide training and technical assistance to rape crisis centers, and the campus initiative. Additionally, the person in this position will participate in efforts to ensure future funding of these programs. 

This position also offers the opportunity to provide leadership in the development and execution of the policy and strategic planning efforts of the Alliance. 


Specific responsibilities inherent to the position include: 

  • Staff and lead the strategic direction of Alliance programmatic efforts;
  • Providing support and guidance for program staff (4-5 direct reports) and consultants; 
  • Develop and facilitate programs and initiatives related to:
  •  the prevention of sexual violence among youth and in nightlife spaces;
  • the training and technical assistance on evidence informed, best care practices to hospitals, healthcare clinics, rape crisis programs, college and university communities, human services providers, and community-based organizations.
  •  In collaboration with the fiscal team, manage grant contracts, including the development and execution of work plans, budget development, and reporting; 
  • Ensure compliance with funding requirements and high-level communication with funders, stakeholders and community partners; 
  • Participate / co-lead various citywide coalitions and task forces; 
  • Collaborate with the staff to develop new programs and funding opportunities;
  • Collaborate with communication and development staff to promote Alliance programming. 

  Qualifications/Skills:

  • A minimum of 8 years of full-time professional experience in sexual assault, gender-based violence, or a similar field; 
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience in two or more of the following areas: evidence informed sexual violence prevention programs; youth programing, campus sexual assault; or best practices in capacity building and technical assistance delivery;  
  • Demonstrated skills in the support and development of diverse staff and the creation of healthy team dynamics grounded in equity and anti-racism, especially in a hybrid or full-remote work environment;  
  • Experience developing and implementing successful training and technical assistance initiatives;  
  • Proven experience in handling multiple stakeholders and partners to ensure timely performance of project deliverables; 
  • Demonstrable skills in program design and project management, as well as ability to guide staff from program planning to execution; 
  • Experience and knowledge in evaluation tools and data collection methods desired. 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; 
  •  Ability to work well independently, collaboratively, and across issue area with diverse communities and institutions;
  • Sensitivity to the impact of sexual violence in diverse communities and the ability to articulate these concerns to various stakeholders in a sensitive and respectful manner; 
  • Dedication to using a social justice, anti-oppression, anti-racist framework to carry out work. 

Working Environment:

As the Alliance restarts operations, the organization is operating in a full-remote capacity. Once programming has fully restarted, we anticipate offering a mixture of in-person and virtual training opportunities for the communities and organizations we serve. As a result, staff will have access to flexible, hybrid work schedules, though occasional in-person meetings and training sessions will be necessary.
