LAC uses legal and policy strategies to fight discrimination, build health equity, and restore opportunities for people with criminal records, substance use disorders, and HIV or AIDS. With offices in New York City and Washington, DC, LAC uses a multi-faceted approach to effectuate its mission and create systemic change, including through impact litigation, legal services, education, and policy advocacy. In addition, LAC's two newly created positions of Director of Community of Engagement and Equity Officer will help ensure the centering of individuals and communities directly impacted by mass incarceration and health inequity in all aspects of LAC's work and LAC's fulfillment of its commitment to addressing racial justice and equity.
Job Summary
LAC seeks a full-time Paralegal to provide direct legal services; client and stakeholder training and education; community engagement; and policy advocacy. The ideal candidate must be a patient and caring professional with a proven track record of reliability, professionalism, and confidence keeper. This position will join our paralegal team to support our clients. The individual must be highly motivated and organized. This position reports to the Senior Staff Attorney for Legal Services.
LAC has instituted a hybrid work model for our return to the office. This position will include the opportunity to work some of the time remotely, even after a full re-opening. COVID-19 vaccination and booster, if applicable, are required as a condition of employment.
Responsibilities:
• Direct Legal Services
▪ Interview clients; provide clients with legal information, referrals, or advice under an attorney's supervision
▪ Work with attorneys to resolve client legal issues, including investigating and analyzing cases, conducting advocacy, and maintaining case files
▪ Maintain client relationships during LAC's representation
▪ Opportunities to represent clients in administrative proceedings when resources permit
• Client and Stakeholder Training and Education
▪ Provide virtual and in-person training to clients, directly impacted communities, and providers/advocates working within those communities
▪ Assist in development of new print and web-based materials
• Community Engagement
▪ Network within directly impacted communities and with organizations working within those communities, including making outreach presentations, attending community events, and generating cross-referrals
• Policy Advocacy
▪ Opportunities to engage in policy advocacy when resources permit
Required Qualifications
• Associate degree or equivalent related work experience
• Experienced with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel)
• Ability to work with people from a variety of backgrounds
• Excellent organizational and time management skills
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
Preferred Qualifications
• Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred
• Experience with Salesforce is a plus
Compensation and Benefits: Salary is commensurate with experience: The salary range is $48,500 to $55,000 per year. Excellent benefits, including medical insurance, 403(b) plan with employer contribution, and flexible pre-tax benefits.
