Objective: 

Design and provide innovative and exceptional racial equity support for predominantly white-run-and-led farmed animal protection organizations and manage our Caucus and Social Media Manager (who works ~5 hours/week) who empowers Black, Indigenous, and advocates of the global majority.

Summary: 

We are searching for a results-oriented Program Director. To succeed in this role, you maintain high racial equity competency, are comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and can work independently from ideation to implementation. 

Encompass is currently in the process of reimagining what our programs will look like and we’re seeking someone who can help with the visioning, design, and implementation of this new direction which has been inspired by the Government Alliance on Race and Equity.

As our Program Director, you are a racial equity advocate and will use an anti-racist lens and practice in all work; this includes having both a theoretical and practical understanding of how racism operates interpersonally, institutionally, and structurally, and be able to teach others through facilitation and practice. You will help the animal protection movement develop its racial literacy and support leaders advance this work in a way that’s grounded in accountability. 

Success in this role requires that you have an extremely strong racial equity framework coupled with the ability to operationalize these concepts in predominantly white spaces. 

We currently have a team of two full-time staff (executive director and executive assistant) and a part-time Caucus and Social Media Manager so you will need to have an enthusiastic startup mentality, can see the big picture, support the team in unexpected ways, work independently, and be comfortable with uncertainty. There is tremendous room for growth, and this position provides you an opportunity to work closely with the executive director to continue to build Encompass’ foundation and programs as the organization grows. Your role will evolve over time.

Primary responsibilities and duties

  • Design and facilitate tools, resources, and learning sessions (virtual and in-person) incorporating a race equity analysis, shared values, and robust understanding of how to operationalize race equity into organization work
  • Provide coaching and capacity-building support to organizations build a race equity culture
  • Stay informed of the latest research, news, and best practices around race equity in the sector, and integrate any new findings into the perspectives that the team shares with stakeholders and partners
  • Design and lead the evaluation of Encompass’ work to support stakeholders, including grant and other impact reporting; work with the Executive Director to identify program metrics and perform data collection and analysis
  • Provide thought leadership by contributing original content to Encompass publications, white papers, reports, and other research materials, including the Encompass blog and social media platforms
  • Form and cultivate relationships with key strategic partners. Present Encompass content to a spectrum of audiences 

Qualifications

Given the nature of the work Encompass takes on and the demands associated with remote and social-distanced working models, you will need to be a nimble and creative practitioner with the emotional intelligence, compassion, patience, sense of humor, and interpersonal communication skills to test new ways of working. As our Program Director you must have:

  • A continually evolving race equity analysis grounded in critical race theory
  • Demonstrated passion and track record of successful action toward anti-racism and social justice
  • Investment in the animal protection sector
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • The ability to present complex and sensitive racial equity issues to senior management in a persuasive manner
  • The ability to design and facilitate small and large racial equity workshops, events, webinars, and digital convenings
  • The ability to work on various projects concurrently, stay organized, and meet deadlines
  • Experience in nonprofit organizations, professional services, or a related field
  • Advanced interpersonal and public communication skills with a growing skillset in strategies to build internal community and culture through virtual communication platforms
  • Excellent conflict resolution skills and comfort engaging in courageous conversations about equity, anti-racism, and racial accountability
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to anticipate challenges before they arise
  • A commitment and deep understanding of Encompass’ philosophy and values
