The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking applicants for the position of Manager to focus on event strategy in Sweden, including our flagship fundraising event, the Voices for Justice Annual Dinner. In collaboration with the Development and Outreach Team in Stockholm, the manager will participate actively in the local fundraising strategy by developing and maintaining a portfolio of supporters and enhancing both internal and external communication. This full-time position will be based in our Stockholm office and will report to the Stockholm City Director.

Due to COVID-19, many of our global offices are operating in reduced capacities. The successful candidate may be required to work remotely if local mandates necessitate. We recognize that this moment, during the pandemic, is a uniquely difficult time for most people, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.

Responsibilities: 

1. Work in partnership with the Stockholm City Director on the fundraising strategy for Sweden and its implementation;

2. Manage the production and logistics of fundraising, outreach, and cultivation events in Sweden, including HRW’s annual Voices for Justice dinner, researcher briefings, film screenings, advocacy, cultivation events;, conferences, and privately hosted dinners;

3. Create agendas, event materials, background materials, branding elements, merchandise strategy, and conduct follow-up to meetings;

4. Identify areas of interest for our community with regards to HRW’s work so that the Development & Outreach department can adopt a proactive and strategic approach to events;

5. Manage various aspects of the Stockholm Committee including committee meetings, executive meetings, sub-committee meetings, communications, special events and projects and working closely with the committee chair;

6. Work with the Stockholm City Director to research, identify, cultivate, service, and solicit new prospects, existing donors, and Stockholm Committee members;

7. Coordinate public programs and outreach, including managing the speaker outreach committee, forming relationships with partner organizations, and identifying new opportunities;

8. Create and track guests lists, donor lists, fundraising, and expenses and budget for all events;

9. Manage communications with constituents via phone, mail and electronic media;

10. Oversee prospect and donor research and manage Salesforce donor entry;

11. Represent the work of HRW to existing and prospective supporters; and

12. Perform other responsibilities as may be required. 

Qualifications: 

Education: A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in communications, marketing, social sciences, or related studies is required.

Experience: A minimum of five years of relevant event planning or other fundraising experience is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Demonstrated ability in managing high-level donor relationships is required. 

2. Experience coordinating events, preferably large-scale events is required.

3. Creativity, initiative, follow-through and excellent organizational skills are required. 

4. Commitment to working with staff and partners in a positive, collaborative, diverse, and inclusive work environment is required. 

5. Strong oral and written communications skills in English and Swedish are required. 

6. Demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues and the capacity to master and represent the mission and programs of HRW are required. 

7. Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and orientations are required. 

8. An entrepreneurial and disciplined self-starter who can work independently, but also function as a member of a development team, is highly desirable. 

9. Familiarity with fundraising in Sweden is strongly preferred.
