Job Summary:

This position, under the supervision of attorneys, and a case manager, primarily performs functions related to complex family law litigation. The successful candidate needs to be able to independently perform case file reviews, communicate with clients, gather and summarize documents from clients and potential witnesses, update case files and data management systems, and provide litigation support from client intake through post-trial actions.

Schedule: Monday to Friday, normal business hours unless otherwise agreed. Full-time with paid Federal holidays, vacation and sick leave.

Training and Experience: Must have two (2) or more years of family law litigation experience providing independent support to attorneys from client intake through trial. A paralegal certificate from an ABA approved paralegal program is preferred.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support and assist attorneys in case litigation.
  • Organize and manage case files.
  • Identify legal and procedural issues in individual cases.
  • Request, gather, review, redact, secure documents from clients and potential clients.
  • Summarize documents, develop and maintain indices and binders for litigation.
  • Maintain email and phone contact with clients during pendency of litigation.
  • Schedule appointments, maintain calendar, and provide reminder calls and contacts to clients.
  • Document all contacts with clients and other third-parties.
  • Draft document requests, subpoenas, and notices for record and oral depositions and arrange for services of same.
  • Update file and case management systems.
  • Draft retainer agreements for expert witnesses and submit executed copies to appropriate personnel for payment.
  • Navigate MDEC - Maryland Courts' electronic system - including filing documents with courts and downloading documents through the MDEC Portal.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree or a combination of an Associate's degree, Paralegal Certificate, and/or demonstrated skills in case management, writing, research and communications.
  • One-year paralegal certificate (preferred).
  • Ability to speak professionally and with empathy to clients who have experience traumatic events.
  • Ability to work with people of diverse educational, cultural and economic backgrounds.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational capacities and experience.
  • Ability to prioritize workload and assignments.
  • Ability to identify legal and other issues and bring to the attention of the case manager and/or attorneys when appropriate.
  • Ability to maintain work deadlines and to follow directions.
  • Ability to prepare a case from initial intake, through discovery, and trial.
  • Ability to review court case files and concisely summarize and issue spot information using charts, tables, chronologies, etc.
  • Ability to sense where factual problems may be in a case or where essential information is missing and is needed for a full picture.
  • Manage a case file indexing system that can be used as an active archive for all ongoing and completed cases.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint), Adobe Pro, cloud-based document management systems (DropBox, etc.) and case management systems (CLIO, e.g.) and general office equipment, including but not limited to: printers, copiers, scanners.
  • Reliable transportation, driver's license and insurance, and ability to travel throughout the state, as needed.
  • Ability to bend and lift up to 20 pounds.

Benefícios

After three (3) months of successful employment, employee will received reimbursement for medical insurance through QSEHRA, short and long-term disability insurance, basic life insurance, including accidental death and dismemberment, 401K retirement savings plan for employee contributions, and 4 weeks paid vacation and 1 week sick leave. Job-related travel mileage will be reimbursed, as well as up to $90.00 per month for cell phone usage.
