LOCATION: Minneapolis–Saint Paul Metro Area

The Community Organizer position will be based out of NJP’s physical office in Saint Paul, Minnesota, with the expectation of conducting field work throughout the Hennepin County area. The Community Organizer must have access to reliable transportation during working hours and is required to work some evenings and occasional weekend hours to further community outreach and engagement.

About New Justice Project (NJP)

New Justice Project MN is a Black led organizing hub focused on building power for and with low income and no income Black Minnesotans by organizing in the policy areas of jobs, housing and supporting the ongoing work of reimagining community safety. Our organization’s values are grounded in centering the most directly impacted community members, leadership development, political education and trusting the leadership of Black workers and the Black community to create change in their city and state through policy change and direct advocacy.

NJP is a fiscally sponsored organization; staff is employed by TakeAction Minnesota. TakeAction Minnesota is a multiracial people’s organization that brings democracy alive in communities across our state.

About the Position

The New Justice Project (NJP) is seeking a Community Organizer - Housing Justice to build power to win social and economic change in Minnesota. As a Community Organizer with NJP, you will be a critical member of the Organizing Team and have the responsibility of base building (outreach, recruitment, and engagement of grassroots community members), and developing their leadership to take public action at the city, county, state and federal levels to advance NJP’s priority campaigns. This position requires a love for outreach, relationship building, conscious listening, and investment in self and others as community leaders.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Recruit, develop and equip community members to fight for justice and equity in the public arena
  • Organize and execute a listening process to uncover the most pressing issues facing the community
  • Build powerful organizing campaigns to win change and advance racial equity and economic justice in the communities we work
  • Work with staff and current members to implement an organizing strategy that engages voters and non-voters, and build a core team of grassroots members in Hennepin County
  • Lead public actions and meetings with directly impacted individuals and decision-makers
  • Utilize different tactics, such as phone banking, canvassing, and community outreach, to engage and recruit leaders into campaigns
  • Coordinate logistics and systems to collect data, communicate with leadership network and ensure that members have what they need to succeed
  • Will be responsible of engaging often ignored voters in voter work to move forward NJP priority campaigns

Desired Qualifications We are seeking a team player who is genuinely curious about people, has a love for justice, and is interested in growing the organization into a powerhouse for grassroots organizing. Candidates with at least 2 years of organizing experience in the community and with a track record of base building will be prioritized, but those with experience in student organizing will also be considered.

  • Proven track record of establishing quick rapport and working well with people from different backgrounds
  • Must be able to work independently and manage a team of volunteer members
  • Ability to sign-up dues paying members
  • Proven track record of working in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment and be detail-oriented
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (listening, speaking, and writing)
  • Commitment to understand race, class, gender, and other equity issues as part of your work
  • Experience working with low income communities, communities of color, and/or the labor movement helpful

  • Flexibility to periodically work outside normal business hours that include evenings and weekends, and periodically work extended hours to accomplish requirements of the position.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

Work is performed in a standard office environment which requires occasionally lifting such articles as file boxes or heavier materials up to 25lbs with help from others and/or lifting and carrying light objects frequently. A job in this category may require walking or standing to a significant degree or may involve sitting most of the time with long periods of computer work and heavy phone usage.

Salary/Benefits/Other Information

  • Salary is commensurate with experience and starts at $52,020.
  • Full time employment defined at thirty-two (32) hours a week.
  • Full health and dental benefits through HealthPartners. New Justice Project pays 95% of monthly insurance premiums for the employee and their family.
  • Long Term Disability, AD&D and life insurance provided at no cost to employee.
  • 401(k) and Roth 401(K) Retirement plans with up to 3% employer match.
  • 3 weeks of vacation in the first year, 2 weeks of sick and safe leave upon hire with another 2 weeks in the first year, 8 paid holidays, and an office closure the last week of the year.
  • 12 weeks paid parental leave, as well as other health related extended paid leave options.
  • Annual 4% guaranteed pay increase;
  • Monthly reimbursements including cell phone and home internet use

  • This position reports directly to the Organizing Director.
  • This position is located in our St. Paul office, but may be required to occasionally travel. In response to COVID-19, all employees are resourced to work from home or under a hybrid model as needed.
