The Minnesota Freedom Fund is hiring for a Bail Specialist. Bail Specialists are on the frontline of our work as part of a small but growing staff, the ideal candidate should be flexible and willing to work in a fast-paced environment.

The Minnesota Freedom Fund pays criminal bail and immigration bonds for those who cannot afford to as we seek to end discriminatory, coercive, and oppressive jailing. We intervene in this inequitable reality by paying the bail for low-income individuals. By doing so we allow people to continue to work their job, pay their rent, and raise their kids while their case concludes. We currently pay bail for individuals arrested in Hennepin, Ramsey, Dakota, Anoka and Washington Counties, but could expand to other areas. We pay immigration bonds for individuals detained anywhere in Minnesota. In this way the fund’s capital operates as a rotating loan pool with each dollar being recycled to support multiple clients.

The Position

The candidates best suited to this role will have lived or paid experience in direct services, legal research, and data management, and will be well-situated to interface with communities most impacted by mass incarceration.

Duties & Responsibilities

Evaluate and pay criminal bails based on MFF policy

  • Vet candidates to ensure eligibility;
  • Communicate as needed with attorneys and family members to process the bail;
  • Reliably transport large sums of money from the bank to the jail; and
  • Ensure bail is properly paid and processed at jails.

Database upkeep and administrative tasks

  • Research and track court appearances and enter information into database;
  • Follow strict confidentiality and legal guidelines regarding the information we collect from all the individuals we work with; and
  • Ensure all necessary paperwork is properly filed with courts.

Programmatic advancement and support

  • Participate and engage with other bail team members and entire MFF staff to evaluate and improve current practices on an ongoing basis; and
  • Support other team members and departments as needed.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of our criminal legal system;
  • Experience in one of the following areas, grassroots organizing, legal services, or community based work;
  • Exemplary organizational skills and ability to pay keen attention to detail;
  • Strong project management skills and ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment that combines direct service and policy work;
  • Willingness to handle and transport bail money; car required;
