About Community Works

Community Works (CW) provides direct services and advocacy for people impacted by incarceration. This work takes place in jails, prisons and communities across the Bay Area. The agency’s mission is to engage youth and adults in programs that interrupt and heal the impacts of incarceration and violence by empowering individuals, families, and communities. CW’s long-term goal is to radically reduce the number of individuals entering and re-entering the juvenile and criminal justice systems and to reduce those systems' impacts on individuals, families, and communities, particularly low-income communities of color.

About the Position

Community Works is looking for an experienced, Part-time (15-20 hours/week), Grants Accountant. Under the supervision of the CFO, the Grants Accountant is responsible for preparing monthly grant/contract invoices to state, city and private grantors as well as maintaining grant budgets, preparing journal entries for expense allocations, general ledger account analysis and reconciliations, submitting budget modifications and answering relevant inquiries.

What you’ll work on:

  • Prepare invoices with required supporting documentation and submit invoices to grantors on a timely basis
  • Work closely with the project staff to submit monthly/quarterly required financial reports
  • Maintain grant invoice and payment worksheet
  • Perform analysis of actual vs budget and coordinate with CFO for potential need for budget modifications
  • Close out the grant and submit final report and other deliverables
  • Oversee all aspects of accounts receivable and receipts
  • Ensure the appropriate recording of individual donations and cash receipts, and reconciliation with development function records and fundraising software (Network for Good)
  • Assist with coding expenses, monthly close and annual financial audit
  • Perform other ad-hoc projects or tasks as requested by CFO

What we’re looking for:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or Related Field
  • 5+ years of invoicing experience
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Exceptional Excel skills (Data sorting, subtotals, V-LOOKUP, pivot tables)
  • Energetic, positive, self-motivated person who is able to set priorities, and communicate well with all levels of staff and external sources:  funders and partners
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to leverage good judgment in problem-solving and issue escalation

It would be nice if you had:

  • Experience working in a not-for-profit environment
  • Experience working with QuickBooks
  • Demonstrated cultural competency and ability to communicate and interact effectively with people across cultures, ethnic groups, and identities

Must be COVID-19 vaccinated and able to come into the office at least 3 days per week.
