Program Description

Staten Island Legal Services (SILS) (across the street from the ferry terminal) seeks a passionate attorney to join our Immigration Unit as a full-time Staff Attorney.

Staten Island Legal Services, part of Legal Services NYC, fights poverty and seeks racial, social, and economic justice for low-income New Yorkers. SILS provides high-quality, innovative representation to address the pressing legal needs of Staten Island’s diverse low-income populations. SILS focuses on the problems that have the greatest impact on our clients — preserving affordable and decent housing, representing survivors of domestic violence, obtaining immigration status and preventing deportations, advocating for the LGBTQ community, preventing foreclosures, and advocating for students with educational needs.

In addition to being the largest provider of civil legal services in the country, LSNYC provides numerous opportunities for growth and professional development. Our Learning Center provides opportunities to earn free CLEs and gain experience as a trainer. LSNYC prides itself on its Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) efforts. As a social justice organization, we are committed to fighting for a workplace that is as diverse, equitable, and inclusive as possible for everyone. Our DEIB committee and numerous affinity groups work to foster collegial relationships among staff and allow staff to explore and advocate for racial justice and anti-oppression growth within our organization and through our legal work. All employees are expected to learn about, seek to understand and work to realize our DEIB goals.

Roles and Responsibilities

The staff attorney will provide deportation defense in immigration court to individuals and families in removal proceedings and will also handle affirmative immigration matters with USCIS, such as asylum applications, family-based petitions, consular processing, naturalization, VAWA self-petitions, petitions for U or T-nonimmigrant status, and many other types of immigration applications. The staff attorney will also represent clients in family court proceedings related to Special Immigrant Juvenile Status cases. The attorney will work closely with our staff social worker to provide trauma-informed representation and advocacy on behalf of clients and their families. This is a great opportunity to do substantive immigration law work with a diverse client population in an underserved community.

The attorney will be supervised by the Director of Immigration and will be working in a hybrid remote work and work from office model (per the LSNYC Collective Bargaining Agreement).

Additional duties include:

·      Intake, community education, and community outreach.

·      Collaborating with other LSNYC attorneys and advocates on cross-unit and borough projects.

·      Partnering with community-based organizations on various campaigns or projects.

·      Mentoring pro bono partners.

·      Administrative tasks, including timekeeping, uploading documents, data reporting, and case closing for grant compliance.

Experience and Qualifications

We seek an attorney admitted to the New York State Bar with:

·      Demonstrated passion for social justice and commitment to working with low-income immigrants to advance equality;

·      At least 2-3 years of immigration law direct services experience preferred;

·      Substantive litigation and/or removal defense experience preferred;

·      Experience working with clients who have experienced trauma and vulnerable populations (particularly domestic violence survivors, LGBTQ communities, and youth) preferred;

·      Excellent analytical, written, and communication skills;

·      Strong interpersonal and organizational skills;

·      Fluency or working proficiency in Spanish is preferred.

Competitive public interest salary, hybrid remote work policy, and excellent benefits package.
