I. Position Summary

Reporting to the Editorial Manager, the Editorial Coordinator will support Malala Fund’s Communications and Creative team in amplifying the voices of girls around the world and in covering Malala Fund’s work in its programmatic countries (currently Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Brazil, Ethiopia, India, Lebanon, Nigeria, Pakistan and Tanzania). This position will provide administrative support to the editorial team within the Communications and Creative department and assist in proofreading, editing and writing for Malala Fund’s external facing content — including for Assembly, Malala Fund’s digital publication and newsletter. The ideal candidate is a highly organised individual with strong writing skills who thrives in a fast-paced, detail-oriented, creative environment.

II. Responsibilities

  • Provide administrative support to the editorial team, including meeting notes, expense and budget tracking, transcribing interviews and other duties as assigned.
  • Manage projects between Communications staff and consultants — including translators, graphic designers, printers — and other Malala Fund departments.
  • Maintain communications databases to track outreach, content and metrics, as well as published articles, photos and other assets.
  • Help maintain Assembly’s website and Apple News by formatting posts and updating content.
  • Research and reach out to social media accounts and influencers to help grow awareness of Assembly content 
  • Develop optimisation strategies to improve Assembly’s website search engine ranking results.
  • Assist in proofreading and fact checking Assembly articles in accordance with Assembly’s style guide.
  • Assist in proofreading (e.g., website copy, letters, reports, essays and other written materials) in accordance with Malala Fund’s style guide.
  • Research and write a variety of original content for Assembly and correspond with potential contributors.
  • Participate in editorial meetings to brainstorm and generate ideas for Assembly.
  • Translate posts (if fluent in a second language that is relevant to Malala Fund’s work).
  • Upholds the values of Malala Fund.
  • Actively contributes to making Malala Fund a diverse and equitable workplace through inclusive practice and openness to different perspectives, cultures and ideas.
  • Maintains behaviour and conduct that uphold the highest standards for safeguarding, professionally and personally.

III.  Knowledge, Experience and Behaviours


  • Relevant work or internship experience in communications, publishing or media.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, with previous experience in proofreading and copyediting.
  • Knowledge of AP style.
  • Strong research skills.
  • Ability to tailor writing to different contexts and audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and prioritise a professional workload while working well under pressure and deadlines.
  • Proven capacity to maintain a high degree of confidentiality of sensitive organisational matters.
  • A demonstrated commitment to gender and racial equality.
  • Legally authorised to work in the United Kingdom or the United States.
  • Strong commitment to Malala Fund’s mission, purpose and values.
  • Strong commitment to gender equality, anti-racism, anti-discrimination, decolonisation and social justice

  •  Written fluency in any language(s) relevant to Malala Fund’s work
  • Experience improving website search engine ranking results.
  • Knowledge of Squarespace, Apple News or Mailchimp.

Malala Fund seeks to enable staff to build for their future and therefore offers a 403(b) plan for employee retirement savings. Malala Fund matches employee contributions up to 3%, without a vesting period.

Health Insurance:

Malala Fund currently offers a PPO health plan provided by CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield. The current plan is 100% employer-paid, including for employees’ spouses and dependents. The plan includes a high deductible ($2,000 for individuals / $4,000 for families), however, these costs are offset by an HRA debit card to cover the entirety of deductible amounts. Malala Fund also offers 100% employer-paid dental insurance provided by Guardian and 100% employer-paid vision coverage provided by CareFirst.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs):

To ensure that staff have the option of saving pretax income for important costs, Malala Fund offers FSA options to employees. Staff have the option of automatically setting aside their own pretax income for medical expenses ($2,700 annual max), dependent care ($5,000 max), and transportation expenses ($3,180 max).

Life Insurance:

Malala Fund’s life insurance coverage provides a payout of one year’s salary, up to $250,000.

Vacation Leave:

Malala Fund provides 15 days of paid vacation leave, which is accrued at a rate of five hours per pay period. Vacation leave is capped at 160 hours annually.

Volunteer Leave:

Malala Fund offers 10 hours of volunteer leave available upon hire. Qualifying time must take place during normal business hours.

Sick/Personal Leave:

Malala Fund provides 10 days of fully paid sick/personal leave accrued at a rate of 3.33 hours per pay period. Sick/personal leave is capped at 120 hours annually.

Parental Leave

Malala Fund offers 120 calendar days of paid parental leave at 100% salary. This policy also applies to adoptive and foster parents of a child.

Other Benefits:

Malala Fund provides a mobile phone reimbursement of Malala Fund reserves the right to amend or cancel the terms and conditions of all benefits at its discretion. $75 per month (with additional reimbursements for international, work-related calls). In addition, Malala Fund provides a $200 reimbursement for a new mobile phone when employees start
