Future Ready Teens / South Los Angeles Education Outreach Consultant
The Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL) seeks an Education Outreach Consultant to design and implement outreach efforts that connect local schools and community partners in South Los Angeles with its programs and resources for adolescents. The consultant will develop and deliver recommendations and outreach tools designed to increase youth engagement in LAPL initiatives that promote college readiness, lifelong learning, and civic participation. This is a contract (fee-for-service) position that collaborates with LAPL’s Young Adult Services (YAS) team.
LAPL’s Young Adult Services (YAS) Office aims to bridge knowledge gaps between students, families, and resources to support teens’ journey into happy, healthy adulthood. With 73 locations and 24/7 online resources, LAPL is uniquely positioned to help students in informal out-of-school settings. However, these valuable resources are frequently underutilized, particularly in South Los Angeles, where communities face significant barriers to participation, including economic and racial inequities, language barriers, and transportation challenges.
Future Ready Teens encompasses all programs and services for youth ages 11-19 at LAPL. This initiative focuses on empowering teens and their networks of support (parents, caregivers, librarians, and educators), strengthening teen literacy, and encouraging the exploration of personal interests and the development of essential skills for successful adulthood. Key programs under this initiative include Get Ready for College (GRFC), Student Zones, and Teens Leading Change (TLC).
The South Los Angeles Education Outreach Consultant will deliver the following project outcomes with the YAS Office staff over an 18-month contract period to achieve the following with a focus on LAPL’s Central-Southern Region:
College Readiness
- Expand reach and teen engagement with LAPL’s Get Ready for College resources—especially among underrepresented youth.
- Make data-driven recommendations for program improvements that address service gaps and reduce redundancy from other local providers.
Outreach & Partnership Development
- Identify community partner organizations in South LA that have relatable local mentors for teens in LAPL’s Central Southern Region to encourage underrepresented youth to explore college options and use library resources.
- Collaborate with YAS to increase the visibility of the Teens Leading Change (TLC) program, engage more teens, and strengthen relationships with community partners.
- Work with YAS, Young Adult Librarians, and branch staff to develop best practices for outreach and engagement strategies for GRFC programming, Student Zones, TLC, and other LAPL academic support resources.
Training and Scalable Model Development
- Co-facilitate a College Readiness Community of Practice with the YAS team to enhance knowledge sharing and community building within LAPL and among community and school partner organizations, improving the quality and availability of college-readiness programming for teens and beyond.
- Pilot a systematic coordination process with LAUSD’s Region South to develop a scalable model for robust school-library collaboration.
- Identify current LAUSD college readiness offerings for students and families, including joint programming opportunities and cross-promotion of services.
- Map LAUSD college readiness services, identify overlaps with LAPL college readiness offerings, and gather resources to support planning and scheduling of LAPL programs.
- Compile and maintain comprehensive lists of college support contacts and LAUSD college readiness programs for middle and high school students.
