About Hunger Intervention Program

Hunger Intervention Program (HIP) is a nonprofit organization based in the Lake City neighborhood of North Seattle. HIP’s mission is to increase food security for underserved populations in North King County through nutritious meals, educational programs, and advocacy. Our newest program will serve homeless neighbors at a newly opened shelter in Shoreline, WA. This meal program will be in collaboration with the shelter staff and Lake City Partners Ending Homelessness. If you have a talent for planning menus, cooking for groups, and working with the homeless community, this is an excellent position for you.

 

Position Summary

The individual will work with HIP’s Co-Executive Director of Operations, fellow Meal Program Coordinators, and AmeriCorps volunteers to coordinate the operations of HIP’s shelter meal program. The coordinator will create menus that satisfy nutrition requirements, manage weekly food ordering, prepare for prep shifts, and run meal prep and service. This individual will be split their time between HIP’s central kitchen in Lake City and our satellite kitchen at the shelter, and so the ability to work independently is a must. This position requires a detail-oriented individual with a passion for feeding people, especially community members experiencing homelessness, and the ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.


COVID-19 Statement

HIP follows all local and federal health and safety regulations with respect to the COVID-19 pandemic. Being a food service provider, an essential service during the pandemic, this is an in-person position that requires interacting with community members. All needed PPEs are provided, and everyone must be fully vaccinated to work.


Key Responsibilities and Duties

·       Lead volunteers in the preparation, serving, and cleanup of meals

·       Cook and safely store heat & serve meals for the days HIP is not on site

·       Ensure the safe handling of food by complying with local health and safety standards

·       Create a dynamic and welcoming environment for all volunteers and program participants

·       Independently plan monthly menus, recipes, and weekly shopping lists

·       Maintain organized food storage spaces and coordinate food delivery

·       Participate in HIP events throughout the year

·       Additional duties as assigned


Preferred Skills and Qualifications

·       At least two years of hands-on professional or community kitchen experience

·       A strong ability and inclination to work independently, as well as working as a team

·       Comfort driving a van in the event pick up of food or supplies requires it (orientation provided)

·       De-escalation skills and an earnest interest in working with challenging individuals from a trauma-informed viewpoint

·       Ability to lead and work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds including program participants, staff, volunteers, and community partners

·       Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

·       Strong skills in space efficiency, organization, and time management, both in and out of the kitchen

·       Creativity in impromptu problem solving

·       Passionate about food and addressing issues of hunger


Requirements

·       Comfortable lifting up to 50 pounds on a regular basis

·       Comfortable reaching, bending, standing, and/or kneeling repeatedly

·       Willing to learn and comply with food safety and sanitation rules

·       Pass the Washington State Patrol background check

·       Have a current Driver’s License and clean driving record

·       Have or obtain a current ServSafe Food Manager Certification

·       Have basic computer proficiency including MS Word, Excel, and the Google Suite

This is an hourly position that will pay $19-21 hourly, depending on experience and skills. Additionally, HIP provides a benefits package that includes:
