The Legislative Coordinator will be responsible for supporting the legislative and policy advocacy staff in our Sacramento office w/tracking bills as they make their way through the legislative process and enabling our staff to successfully engage in advocacy on those bills.

Responsibilities

The Legislative Coordinator’s essential duties will include:

Legislative/agency/budget advocacy support:

  • Identifying and tracking progress of all relevant policy and budget bills, keeping attorneys/advocacy staff appropriately informed, supporting attorney/advocacy staff to respond to these bills through oral and written advocacy
  • Scheduling all relevant hearing dates, letter submission deadlines on appropriate staff calendars
  • Providing logistical support for advocacy coalition meetings and retreats (e.g., scheduling, note-taking) and schedule lobbying and research meetings
  • Updating appropriate staff on amendments or bill status changes as they occur and identify those changes
  • Obtaining all fact sheets, template position letters, committee analyses, hearing agendas, budget bill summaries and related handouts
  • Assisting w/production and submission of position letters and coalition sign-on letters, fact sheets, floor alerts, etc.; gather signatures/logos, prepare and proofread templates/drafts
  • Monitoring hearings, provide “me, too” (generic support) testimony, report back on hearing outcomes to attorney/advocacy staff
  • Maintaining electronic file organization and management of legislative/agency/budget advocacy materials

Other support:

  • Providing research, analytical and writing support as needed, including preparing internal and community partner-oriented materials summarizing key budget and policy updates (e.g., slide decks, 1-pagers, infographics, etc.)
  • Summarizing our legislative and budget priorities, positions and outcomes
  • Special projects as identified by attorney/advocacy staff

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • At least 3 years of experience working in a similar role
  • Knowledge of the organization, functions and processes of the Legislative Branch of the California State Government
  • Experience working w/Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Office suite, in particular Outlook, Word (proficiency w/formatting skills is required), Excel, PowerPoint; familiarity w/Google Apps; openness to learning how to use new technology/software

  • Ability to “manage up” – ask questions upon assignment, consult w/supervisor when prioritizing workload, communicate proactively when potential issues or conflicts arise
  • Excellent attention to detail and follow-through
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities – often w/competing or tight deadlines – quickly, accurately and w/poise
  • Reliable, responsive and proactive communicator, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to exercise good judgment
  • High degree of self-motivation and a demonstrated willingness to take initiative
  • Experience using CapitolTrack or other legislation-tracking systems/software
  • Adaptability and flexibility to changing circumstances or priorities
  • Spanish fluency, written and oral

USD $51.000 - USD $55.000
/ ano
The position is full-time (37.5 hours/week) and exempt. The starting salary range for this role is $51,000-$55,000 depending on experience.

*At the time of this posting all our staff continue to work from home but we anticipate a return to the office on March 1, 2022. We are in the process of designing a return to the office that meets the needs of both the organization as well as the staff.
