Higher Achievement, a nationally acclaimed nonprofit organization working to close the achievement gap for motivated, yet underserved students from low-income communities, seeks a Director of Academics and Social Emotional Learning (DASEL). This role reports to the Chief of Program Operations. This position is a Washington, DC metro or Baltimore metro-based position, and the person in this position is responsible for conducting observations regularly in our fourteen achievement centers. Significant travel will be required between Baltimore, DC, and Richmond (several trips per week including evenings for conducting center observations/support). As Pandemic restrictions continue to lift, this position should be based out of the Washington DC metro or Baltimore metro area.

Our afterschool program for 5th-8th grade scholars combines small-group, high-impact tutoring with social-emotional skill building, culminating in placement in college preparatory high schools.

Key Duties and Responsibilities 

 

 

  1. Academic & SEL Strategy: In partnership with program leadership team, develop, vet, and refine the teaching and learning philosophy and practice at Higher Achievement. This will focus on the integration of academics and social emotional learning, in close collaboration with center support staff and center staff to ensure that social emotional and academic development are incorporated into all aspects of HA programming (mentoring, curriculum, HSP, learning blocks, community meeting, etc.). This is core to our theory of action in our strategic plan, with an explicit focus on SEL skills related to goal-setting, self-efficacy, engagement in school, and sense of belonging. 

 

  1. Assessment: Own the successful implementation of our Literacy3000 platform 

 

  1. Program Quality: Create and lead trainings for all staff (for new hires and ongoing trainings, FT & PT staff.) Conduct center observations and share feedback and actionable next steps with center staff. Be available as a resource to center staff to drive program quality on academics and SEL. Advise and, build workplans and create clear link for feedback to DPOs. 

 

  1. Responsible for the implementation of a comprehensive ELA/Literacy program for 5th through 8th grade Higher Achievement scholars: Incorporating field research and staff feedback to create, refine, and implement effective instructional strategies to improve scholars’ reading and writing skills, including staff training, support, use of online learning platforms and feedback through and beyond launch. This new approach will explicitly teach literacy and SEL skills to prepare scholars for college-preparatory high schools. 

 

  1. Evaluation: Review, analyze, and engage staff/management around data/outcomes and recommendations/next steps (e.g. regional calls, center-specific needs/plans, etc. and help us determine what additional expertise, staff we need to deliver our program.  

 

  1. Mentoring Curriculum: Provide support to Senior Manager of Volunteers and Curriculum with development of mentoring curriculum resources. 

 

Position works closely with: Learning Directors, Directors of Program Operations, Director of HSP, Senior Manager of Volunteers

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Understands the unique challenges facing first-generation college students. 
  • Minimum of 10+ years of related work experience, including: 
  • Understanding instructional strategies including how to build a program model that integrates all pieces of a curriculum and academic and SEL goals towards a comprehensive strategy: e.g. how to weave throughout tutoring, community meeting, literacy blocks. 
  • 2+ years of teaching and/or assisting students to excel academically; history of driving significant gains in student achievement on college readiness indicators , experience with literacy a plus 
  • 2+ experience training, managing or coaching team of adults with demonstrated results. 
  • Experience implementing academic curriculum in a K-12 setting required; experience with a focus on out-of-school learning a plus 
  • Experience with mentoring programs. 
  • Expertise in Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and implementing SEL practices required, experience implementing an SEL curriculum a plus 
  • Ability to demonstrate the understanding of relationship building with scholars as foundational to literacy tutoring 
  • Familiarity with approaches to teacher development and training adults on instruction 
  • Experience with mentoring programs-how to integrate SEL/literacy within our volunteer mentoring programming 
  • Demonstrated ability to design, implement, and evaluate programs using qualitative and quantitative methods, and the ability to use data to motivate staff and inform programming 
  • Experience with project management including working across teams with a focus on implementation 
  • Facility with tools such as Excel and databases such as Salesforce strongly preferred. 
  • High-level of comfort with online technology (Office365, Salesforce, Dropbox, Virtual Meeting Platforms) 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; high level of attention to detail (making presentations and conducting trainings) 
  • Strong organizational skills, with an ability to manage competing timelines and many details at one time 
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in education field is a plus 
  • Reading specialist or comparable certification strongly preferred

Compensation and Benefits: The salary for this regular, exempt position is in the low to mid seventies and is commensurate with skills, education, and experience. Higher Achievement offers competitive benefits, including: company-paid insurance (medical, dental, vision, life, and long and short-term disability insurance); ten paid holidays; five weeks paid time off; retirement plan with company match. 

 

Physical Requirements and Work Environment: Work is regularly performed in an office environment and a school setting, with occasional trips off-site to parks, museums, etc. Employee may spend long periods of time sitting, standing, and walking. Must be able to walk from one part of the worksite to another and climb stairs. Employee regularly lifts, carries, and positions objects weighting up to 20 pounds. Position involves regular use of a computer and keyboard, telephone, and face-to-face communication in small and large group settings with youth and adults; employee must be able to communicate clearly and professionally in all of these situations. Employee must have visual, auditory, and physical ability to respond quickly to critical incidents involving students and act in an emergency situation.  

 

Additional Information: As of October 2021, Higher Achievement remains a mostly virtual work environment outside of offering our in-person school-based programming. Once our offices are able to more fully re-open, all staff will be able to work within a hybrid arrangement with in-person time focused on mission critical activities and relationship building rather than an expected amount of time in the office based out of one of our Higher Achievement offices (DC or Baltimore). Significant travel will be required between Baltimore, DC, and Richmond (several trips per week including evenings for conducting center observations or support). As Pandemic restrictions continue to lift, this position should be based out of the Washington DC or Baltimore metro area. Covid-19 vaccination is required for all Higher Achievement employees. This position requires a criminal background check prior to hire, and candidate must be able to pass all additional clearance requirements as mandated by school districts and state/local municipalities.
