About T1International

T1International is a global grassroots patient advocacy organization led by people with and impacted by diabetes, with a focus on type 1 diabetes. We believe in a world where everyone with type 1 diabetes has the opportunity to thrive, with affordable and sustainable access to the medicine and supplies they need. We do not accept funding from the pharmaceutical industry or any medical device manufacturer to maintain our independence and ability to speak out freely.

About the Role

The role of the Advocacy Manager will be to support our Global Advocacy Network as they carry out community building and delivering advocacy plans to improve the lives of people with diabetes in their communities and at the international level. The person in this role will support volunteers and contractors by providing training and leadership development, and developing and implementing plans on T1International’s priority campaigns and other projects.

Role & Responsibilities

Community Building and Volunteer Leadership Development (50%)

  • Engage and organize #insulin4all communities to grow and maintain an informed, active volunteer base who are working on T1International’s priorities globally.
  • Coordinate and facilitate strategy and training, including onboarding and offboarding, monthly Fight for Five Working Group calls and monthly Global Advocacy Network calls.
  • Support contractors, Advocates, Chapters, and Partners in goal-setting, skills development, campaign plan implementation, and otherwise carrying out advocacy and community building actions.
  • Manage and support 1-5 contracted and/or stipended volunteer leaders.

Campaigning and Communications (40%)

  • Build and implement project plans for areas of work and additional projects, as assigned, including campaign activities and actions, volunteer surveys, our annual summit event, and more.
  • Develop and implement digital campaigns and community-led actions with volunteers related to T1International’s priorities.
  • Lead press work, including maintaining press list, creating and maintaining press relationships, and creating press advisories, releases, and statements as needed.
  • Draft emails, letters, graphics and other materials, content, and copy related to campaign activities.
  • Manage and oversee all graphic and document translations and event interpretation.
  • Support with website management, newsletters, social media content, and other materials.
  • Act as an external ambassador of the organization, represent T1International to key external constituencies when needed, including both formal and informal presentations such as making speeches and attending conferences and other meetings as necessary.

Other (10%)

  • Support overall team fundraising efforts, including supporting grant writing and reporting, building relationships and meeting with funders and donors, and supporting content creation to share about our work and ask for financial support.
  • Advance T1I’s equity and inclusion commitments by engaging in ongoing equity and justice competency building workshops, participating in internal equity meetings, and bringing a focus on antiracism to programs work with volunteers and colleagues.
  • Track participation, campaign progress, and leadership development to achieve organizational goals in our organizational database.
  • Ensure Standard Operating Procedures are followed and remain up-to-date.
  • Other duties, as assigned, which will be consistent with the role.

Core Competencies of Position

  • A genuine belief in T1International’s mission and vision with a strong understanding and commitment to equity and healthcare justice, alongside a passion for issues that people living with diabetes face, and the need to bring the patient voice to the forefront.
  • Minimum of 2 years relevant experience in community building and/or social justice advocacy, preferably on issues that fall within T1I’s strategic priorities or in a global context.
  • Comfortable executing big-picture community organizing and programming strategy and detailed tactical plans, and moving between these levels.
  • Experience managing and supporting volunteers to take action, and working with other organizations.
  • Demonstrated cultural competency working directly with and building power and leadership with diverse communities across the globe (such as volunteers, local leaders, students, parents, healthcare workers, etc.).
  • Strong volunteer/stakeholder management skills, including but not limited to: exceptional interpersonal skills, including an ability to form groups and navigate and resolve conflict in a manner that values and respects relationships with colleagues and volunteers.
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills; keen attention to detail; ability to work simultaneously on multiple projects at various stages of completion with minimal direct supervision.
  • Good problem-solving skills and a positive, ‘let’s make this work’ attitude with sound judgment, flexibility, and determination.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, including writing and editing experience.
  • Experience working with the media.
  • Strong training, facilitation, and presentation skills. Experience virtually facilitating.
  • Excels with Google Workspace (Drive and Documents, Google Meet, and Gmail), Zoom, WhatsApp, and other online communication.
  • Fluency in English (written and oral); other languages desirable.

Hours and expectations

  • T1International operates a 4-day work week Monday-Thursday. However the role requires significant flexibility during the 32-hour work week for meetings and calls early mornings, weeknights, and weekends.
  • T1International is a purely remote office environment. You should be prepared to work from home or a location of your choosing. Occasional travel is required.
