    Alameda County Community Food Bank plays an outsized and enormously visible role in a community in which 1 in 4 residents experiences food insecurity. As such, the Communications Coordinator plays a critical role in fueling our operations and engaging the community in all aspects of our work. Reporting to the Food Bank’s Marketing & Communications Manager (MCM), the Communications Coordinator identifies, creates, and publishes stories, videos and other content about clients, volunteers, donors and other supporters, programs, partners, events, cause marketing partnerships, etc. This position also supports the digital marketing efforts of the team through management of organic social media channels and implementation and reporting support on digital marketing campaigns.

    A candidate for this position will need to be:

    • An experienced storyteller, strong writer, and content creator across multiple channels and formats – newsletters, e-mails, blog posts, social media, video, audio, press releases, etc.
    • An engagement specialist – someone who can grab someone’s attention and keep it across all channels and formats
    • A person with a passion and drive to gather and build relevant stories – a go-getter that will make sure they have a finger on the pulse of the Food Bank happenings as well as the County we serve and is constantly looking for stories to share with our audience
    • A person who can tell client stories as well as the Food Bank’s journey to food justice in a compelling way, and is passionate about both topics
    • Detail-oriented and organized to support the multi-faceted nature of the work we do on the Marketing & Communications team

    Alameda County Community Food Bank is a well-established and multi-faceted organization, which has been at the forefront of hunger relief efforts for nearly 40 years. We are a dedicated group of mission-driven people providing enough food for 50 million meals this year.

    We are about to embark on the beginning of our five-year strategic plan this month. This plan is built on our legacy as forward thinkers as we evolve from a “food charity” to a “food justice” model. Some current focuses? Our new farm partnership and deepening commitment to supporting BIPOC-owned farmers, the broadened scope of our policy change efforts, and our burgeoning Food as Medicine initiatives.     KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

    • Two to three years’ experience in marketing/communications, journalism or content creation with demonstrated ability to identify and create compelling and engaging content
    • Superb written and verbal communication skills and a strong understanding of how to create effective and impactful content for the full breadth of mediums employed by The Food Bank
    • Exceptional creative writing skills with knowledge of marketing principles and ability to produce quality work on a deadline
    • Ability to research, understand, and distill complex and new concepts/topics into content that can be easily understood by the general public
    • Photography and videography, and related editing experience a strong plus
    • Ability to teach best practices for content generation to colleagues outside of Marketing & Communications to empower them to gather engaging stories for internal and external use
    • Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail. Ability to prioritize, handle multiple assignments, deliver finished products under tight deadlines, and quickly adapt to meet unexpected and urgent requests a must
    • Ability to occasionally adjust weekly schedule in order to attend distributions, food bank events, or conduct story gathering outside of normal work hours, on weekends and evenings, as needed.
    • Bilingual (English/Spanish or English/Cantonese) preferred
    • Valid California driver’s license with insurable driving record; access to reliable transportation

    • Passion, enthusiasm, focus, and creativity around Alameda County Community Food Bank’s vision, mission and values of community, leadership, transparency, innovation and diversity. Particular interest in fundraising and advocacy preferred
    • Comfort with and enthusiasm for engaging with and interviewing community members for the purpose of storytelling; adept at identifying compelling story angles and drawing those from interviews. Must be comfortable asking about and discussing sensitive topics including an individual’s lived experience with poverty and/or hunger and creating content about those topics
    • Interested to explore what food justice means and identify key stories to share as the Food Bank evolves
    • Entrepreneurial in the ability to proactively seek/make connections and seek/conceptualize stories
    • Impeccable integrity and honesty
    • Strong work ethic with an orientation toward constant innovation and process improvement
    • Ability to work independently, and in a team setting with food bank clients, supporters and people of diverse backgrounds/circumstances. Comfort visiting and interacting at food distribution sites, fundraisers and other food bank events

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    This work is in an office and a warehouse environment. Frequent local travel involved visiting food bank programs and assist with events. The following physical activities are necessary in the performance of this job: Talking, hearing, writing, reasoning, persuading, interpreting and prioritizing. Ability to move throughout the Food Bank building. Ability to use a computer. Exemplary interpersonal communication.

    This is a full-time, non-exempt position working everyday Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (7.5 hour workday; 1 hour unpaid lunch). We offer an outstanding benefit package including:
