AFT-Oregon is seeking a full-time Political Organizer (hybrid work based in Oregon). 

This position requires travel throughout the state to visit union locals, and frequent work travel and extended work periods in Salem during legislative sessions.

The Political Organizer is responsible for nurturing and advancing AFT-Oregon’s political goals and legislative advocacy to benefit K12, Early Childhood, Community College, and Public University workforces; and for collaborating with AFT-Oregon’s elected leadership to create and implement state-wide organizing and political goals.

The ideal candidate will have 2+ years of experience organizing in a union and/or legislative context, including cultivating strong relationships with members, activists and legislators, drafting legislative concepts, building coalitions for successful campaigns, mentoring member leaders on organizing and political advocacy, event and rally planning, and issue campaign development. 

The position can be based in the Portland, Salem, Eugene or Corvallis areas and will require regular travel to the AFT-Oregon Portland office and to the State of Oregon capitol.

The position includes a competitive salary (DOE) and benefits package in accord with the United Employees Guild/AFT-Oregon Collective Bargaining Agreement, including full employer paid health insurance for employee and family and 12% retirement contribution after six months of hire. 

Initial hiring salary will be at least $69,682 annually (Step 1 of Salary Schedule)  

Salary placement depends on qualifications, experience, and internal and external equity. 

Responsibilities and Essential Functions

  • Collaborates with local leaders, AFT-Oregon staff and Executive Council members to create, implement and track effectiveness of federation-wide organizing plans that integrate the goals of the locals with those of the federation.
  • Supports AFT-Oregon policy agenda and legislative concept proposals to benefit K12, Early Childhood, Community College, and Public University workforces.
  • Represent AFT-Oregon in meetings with lawmakers, coalition partners, and more during legislative hearings and workgroups.
  • Tracks legislation impacting education workers and communities. 
  • Identify, recruit and prepare union members to provide written and verbal testimony in lobby visits, hearings, lobby days, and actions. 
  • Assists in the development of state-wide member outreach, membership drive plans and events for increasing the AFT-Oregon Political Action Fund. Monitors expenditures and tracking of political and solidarity funds to meet regulatory standards.
  • Creates social media content and member outreach materials. Performs member outreach.
  • Responds to requests for political action information, materials, and involvement.
  • Supports our statewide Politics, Policy, Legislation and Solidarity (PPLS) Council. Collaborates and regularly meets with VP for Political Action and works towards collective goals, initiatives, and ideas.
  • Develops knowledge of principles of legislative action and lobbying. Develops a broad range of organizing workshops and training for local, regional, and state-wide educational events.
  • Supports in the planning and implementation of AFT-Oregon events, including our annual member training, convention, and political education events and more. Regularly attend monthly in-person AFT-Oregon staff meetings and other relevant meetings.
  • Supports locals to develop campaign plans for political involvement. Works with AFT-Oregon staff and leadership to implement internal organizing plans with locals that include political and legislative capacity building.
  • Assists with planning and implementation of ballot measure and candidate endorsements and campaign events. Turn out members to election volunteer activities for endorsed candidates to include phone banking and canvassing. Tracks in-kind and cash contributions.
  • Attends meetings and tracks relevant state agencies and institutional government relations teams as assigned.
  • Assists with local organizing as requested to develop worksite leader structures, work with CAT teams, support with local events, drives, strikes, and other mobilization campaigns.


Other related duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience

  • Demonstrated experience dedicated to the labor movement, social and economic justice, and public education for all.
  • 2+ years of experience organizing in a union and/or legislative context, including cultivating strong relationships with members, activists and legislators, drafting legislative concepts, building coalitions for successful campaigns, mentoring member leaders on organizing and political advocacy, event and rally planning, and issue campaign development. 
  • Understanding of the political and legislative process, and a demonstrated interest in political and legislative advocacy in Oregon. 
  • Critical skills should include:
  • Strong organizing ability. Commitment to increasing democratic participation within organizations.
  • Ability to self-direct—independently develop and prioritize goals, tasks, and timelines, and take initiative in projects.
  • Solution oriented with the ability to help locals see opportunities and take action.
  • Ability to explain technical issues in lay terms.
  • Commitment to AFT-Oregon’s mission and to public education. 
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. 
  • Driving long distances for extended periods of time is required. Required to have a valid driver’s license and a working and insured automobile adhering to AFT-Oregon insurance requirements.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Demonstrated experience with legislative and electoral campaigns in Oregon.

  • Is familiar with Slack and Google Workspace including Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Groups, Docs, Sheets, and Slides.
