Position Title: Program Communications Specialist

Reports To: Senior Director of Integrated Communications 

Team: Communications 

Status: Exempt, Non-Bargaining Unit

Job Location: US Remote

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

In pursuit of our mission to help communities implement just and sustainable responses to hunger, poverty, displacement, and disaster, CWS has a thriving and dynamic family of programs worldwide. We are looking for a passionate communicator to raise the voices and share the stories of the people who participate in these programs. The Program Communications Specialist will work with our programs that focus on food security, livelihoods, water, sanitation, hygiene, humanitarian response and services for displaced people in host or transit nations. Please note that this position will not be focused on CWS refugee programs in the United States.

  • You are comfortable working with remote supervision--and likely from a permanent home office-- while also placing a heavy emphasis on team collaboration.
  • You are flexible and able to think on your feet. You will need to balance ongoing strategies and larger campaigns with rapid response work.
  • You love to watch the news and stay informed about disasters and humanitarian response. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Content Curation

The Program Communications Specialist will be the primary point of contact on the communications team for many CWS programs around the world and in the United States. This includes:

  • Creating and executing content acquisition plans with each team.
  • Writing and editing stories in conjunction with program teams and posting them on the CWS website for external use.
  • Soliciting and editing blog posts for the CWS website.
  • Working with the Video and Content Acquisition manager to coordinate contracts with photographers and videographers to supplement staff-produced content.
  • Working with the Funds Development and Marketing team to plan fundraising campaigns and create/provide content for each.
  • Curating a central list of price handles from our programs for campaigns and external sharing; and
  • Ensuring that CWS photo permissions policies are widely understood and implemented.

Humanitarian Response Communications

When a disaster strikes and CWS responds, the Program Communications Specialist will be the hub of response information and strategy. This includes:

  • Direct contact with the program team in the affected area to get the latest information and determine what is appropriate for external sharing.
  • Writing Situation Reports and Emergency Appeals for the CWS website.
  • Creating and populating donation pages on the CWS website.
  • Working with the Social Media Manager to create and implement a social media plan for covering this disaster.
  • Liaising with the Funds Development and Marketing team regarding mass email and other fundraising channels; and
  • Creating resources for the Senior Director of Integrated Communications to share with all staff for internal communications purposes.

Capacity Building

In their role as the liaison to global program teams, the Program Communications Specialist will offer resources, training and support for communicators and staff within those teams. This includes:

  • Creating a working group of communicators and social media managers who focus on global development and humanitarian response content.
  • Working alongside the Video and Content Acquisition manager and the Social Media Manager to create resources for staff about social media, story gathering, video and photography best practices. 

Engagement Within the Communications Team

The Program Communications Specialist is a member of the CWS Communications team. As part of this team, they will:

  • Engage with the Senior Director of Integrated Communications and Social Media Manager to plan campaigns and curate the needed content. 
  • Engage with the Director of Media and Media Associate to match reporters with appropriate leads and stories.

The Program Communications Specialist also performs other duties as assigned. This position may require occasional travel.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

A minimum of a B.A./B.S. in journalism, communications, or a related field; or comparable professional experience.

Experience:

  • 2-3 years of relevant work experience in a professional setting.
  • Expertise in crafting compelling and engaging stories is required.
  • Experience creating content for social media is preferred.
  • Experience engaging with the press is preferred.

Required Skills:

  • Strong writing skills with fluency and comfort writing and editing in English.
  • Comfort with working virtually with colleagues across time zones. 
  • Skill at editing content diplomatically and collaboratively.
  • Skill at organizing and managing projects to ensure timely completion within budget.
  • Professionalism and enthusiasm when engaging with colleagues and partners on the phone, by email and in person. 

Preferred Skills:

  • Ability to speak multiple languages, especially Spanish, French, Creole, Serbian, Burmese, Khmer, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Thai or Japanese.
  • Skill with design software such as Canva or the Adobe Suite.
  • Familiarity with posting and updating content using WordPress.
