    Spence-Chapin is seeking a dynamic leader to join our team of professionals who can guide the financial and operational systems that empower us. We are searching for a skilled Senior Director of Finance to lead our Finance, IT, and Operations divisions and support the CEO. Non-profit and supervisory experience required. The qualified candidate will possess excellent analytical and communication skills. This is an in-person position with an annual salary range of $170,000 to $180,000 commensurate with experience.

    Responsibilities

    Financial Planning: Strategy & Budget

    • Develop, along with the CEO, financial strategy and plans to support growth.
    • Set clear objectives and measures for financial performance of the organization.
    • Oversee and direct the preparation of the annual budget.
    • Oversee implementation of financial plans and annual budgets for each department.
    • Develop multi-year budgets; forecast revenue, expense, and cash flow; and conduct activity-based financial analyses to compliment Spence-Chapins’ operations, programs, and business plans.
    • Oversee, along with the CEO, all investment accounts through current investment advisors.
    • Work with advisors on ensuring timely consistent reporting, investment activity, and cash flow needs, etc.
    • Serve as liaison between investment and advisors and the board.

    Financial Operations: Accounting & Finance Functions

    • Oversee all accounting and finance functions of the organization; lead timely completion of monthly closing process; perform advanced accounting tasks; and oversee and participate in preparation of related financial and cash flow statement and reconciliation of accounts.
    • Assess the timeliness and accuracy of tasks performed. Monitor process, progress and results and design feedback loops into work.
    • Ensure all fiscal practices meet the highest standard of integrity and comply with GAAP and other industry standards.
    • Implement financial policies and procedures that maintain an effective internal control environment with proper segregation of duties.
    • Continually work toward promotion of efficiency and effectiveness of all finance functions, via process and workflow improvements; including investment in and implementation of technology to support automation.
    • Negotiate and manage all banking and vendor relationships.
    • Lead annual audit preparation, liaison during all audit phases.
    • Supervise and participate in the preparation of annual 990.
    • Provide accounting and financial assistance to other departments and train staff on fiscal procedures and budget management, as needed.
    • Lead, along with respective chairs, all committee matters pertaining to Audit and Finance, including setting forth the agenda, presentation materials, and ensuring timely scheduling of all meetings. Serve as the finance representative at the committee and board meetings.
    • Serve as the liaison with the chair of the Finance and Audit Committees, as well as with other members of the Board.

    Financial Monitoring, Analysis & Reporting

    • Produce and analyze monthly, quarterly, annual and multi-year financial statements and communicate trends and emerging issues as necessary.
    • Analyze budget variances and work cross-functionally to address any significant differences.
    • Support senior leadership to develop forecasts and verify billable and staff time costs.
    • Develop sophisticated reporting (narratives, financials, dashboards, etc.) to communicate financial results and trends.
    • Provide regular updates to various internal and external stakeholders on all finance functions and activities as agreed upon with the CEO. Attend and present at leadership group, board, and board committee meetings.
    • Conduct multi-year and project specific analyses to inform future planning and strategies.
    • Ensure all financial issues are accurately tracked and resolved.
    • Lead grants management functions.

    Information Technology

    • Oversee the creation, maintenance and continuous upgrade of infrastructure including data, systems, technology, policies, procedures, and control via supervision of the IT department.
    • Provide leadership and oversight for IT matters via supervision of outsourced vendors and in-house IT staff.
    • Support development of annual technology plan and budget.

    Facilities Management

    • Oversee procurement and operations related activities, including workspace planning.
    • Provide leadership and supervision for the Operations team.
    • Oversee the process of engaging outside contractors and communicating with building management as needed for site repairs, remodels, replacements, and upgrades.

    Leadership / Management

    • Exercise sound judgment and a passionate commitment to the welfare of children and the mission of Spence-Chapin.
    • Maintain a level of strict confidentiality (where needed) while conducting work.
    • Represent Spence-Chapin in a professional manner at all times, both internally and externally.
    • Motivate, lead and direct staff. Provide opportunities for staff to increase and enhance their skills so that they can function effectively in positions of increasing responsibility.
    • Empower staff through active and inclusive communication and delegation and ensure staff accountability for excellence and outcomes through clearly defined, collaboratively established and measurable goals.

    Education & Experience

    • Bachelor's Degree required; Business or Finance degree preferred
    • Advanced Degree or Certification highly preferred
    • 8+ years of financial leadership or relevant experience required; 5+ years managing a team
    • Experience developing and executing strategy for existing and new businesses
    • Experience with budgeting/forecasting required
    • Proven experience collaborating with boards and board committees, providing strategic financial insights and guidance to support organizational goals

    Technical Skills

    • Excel – high proficiency
    • MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
    • QuickBooks
    • Contract reading and familiarity a plus
    • Basic knowledge of data systems
