About Kingmakers of Oakland

Kingmakers of Oakland (Kingmakers) is a social enterprise born out of Oakland Unified Schools’District Office of African American Male Achievement (AAMA). At Kingmakers, we fundamentally believe that all Black males are brilliant, beautiful, and possess innate greatness. Kingmakers works with schools and districts to 1) deliver culturally relevant curriculum and pedagogy, 2) support the recruitment and retention of Black male teachers, 3) amplify student voice and agency, and 4) engage parents and families. At the ecosystem level, we work to 5) drive narrative change and 6) advocate for policy reform that will support and acknowledge the genius and value of Black boys. Our programming, driven by the experiences and feedback of Kings, addresses the failures of the education system on behalf of Black boys due to exclusion, anti-Black racism and inequitable access to resources and support systems critical for thriving. Kingmakers model leverages a systems change approach that is both a means to an end, as well as an end itself. In order to address a universal problem (the US education system not equitably supporting all students), Kingmakers explicitly utilizes a targeted approach focused on a community that the education system has deeply marginalized (Black boys). At the same time, Kingmakers recognizes that supporting the development of Black boys is critical work that needs to be prioritized by the leaders at all levels of the K-12 education system.

Kingmakers leverages an integrated impact approach at the structural, relational and transformative levels of systems change: 

● Healing the fish: Work with school districts (currently a total of seven) to support Black boys by introducing culturally relevant pedagogy, supporting recruitment and retention of Black male teachers, amplifying student voice and agency, and engaging parents and families; and 

● Treating the toxic ecosystem: Work to drive narrative change and advocate for policy reform that will support and acknowledge the genius and value of Black boys. 

In this way, Kingmakers' direct impact approach with students and teachers is fundamentally integrated and embedded within its larger systems-level approach with families, communities, districts and policy makers. We hold ourselves accountable to supporting school districts in effectively applying the Kingmakers model to their unique contexts, to centering Kings as thought partners and drivers of their innovation, and to ultimately shifting the mindsets and approaches of education system leaders to better support Black boys. 'KOO's model was built based on a decade of deeply impactful programming that began in Oakland Unified School 'District's Office of African American Male Achievement (AAMA). Now in its fourth year of operation as a separate entity from OUSD AAMA, Kingmakers leverages a multi-pronged, systems-oriented consulting model that aims to expand this impact to 100 districts within the next 10 years. In 10 years of deep impact in Oakland, and three years of expanding into other districts, the Kingmakers team has seen notable shifts in the way Black boys and young men engage in narrative change work, speak truth to power in their communities, and challenge the policies embedded in the education system to do better by them. By creating and releasing message-driven music, leading student advisory council sessions, and even influencing strategy via the Kingmakers board, Kings who engage the Kingmakers model utilize the power of their self love and identity to drive systems level change. 


Position Summary 

Our Learning Collaborative, composed of cross-functional intergenerational district teams, is rooted in a desire to collaborate, coordinate and convene folks who are inspired to create a healthy, affirming learning environment for Black boys in the public school system.  


Through professional development, narrative change resources, curriculum, and more, Kingmakers helps each unique district transform its school environment. We are seeking an experienced educator who can support our partner school districts in our Kingmakers Learning Collaborative—leading a cross-functional inter-generational team across multiple districts across the nation along a liberatory design process and Systems Change Frameworks. 


The successful candidate will join a Black-led organization with a team of passionate, fun, intelligent professionals who have demonstrated a commitment to engaging, encouraging, and empowering the next generation of leaders and changemakers.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage Learning Collaborative Team 
  • Ensure fidelity of KOO's 6 Drivers across districts and internal processes;
    1. Deliver culturally relevant curriculum and pedagogy 
    2. Recruit, train, and retain Black male teachers 
    3. Amplify student voice and Youth Leadership
    4. Parent, family, and community engagement 
    5. Narrative change 
    6. Policy reform 
  • Coach, direct and support district teams to develop their 3-5  year plan aligned with our frameworks and systems change drivers
  • Coach, direct and support district liaisons and consultants to increase their capacity to contribute to district team development, management of participants' experience, and facilitation of district teamwork and learning
  • Design scope and sequence and instructional guides for the year-long professional transformation of district stakeholders
  • Co-design and lead the planning, preparation, and facilitation of the Kingmakers of Oakland Learning Collaborative
  • Oversee the coordination and effective delivery of all Learning Collaborative events and convenings
  • Ensure strong communication and client satisfaction with all partner districts through direct communication with district team designees and 'KOO's liaisons and consultants as appropriate
  • Provide training and goal setting support to a growing number of partner school district teams, assisting them in identifying their problem of practice and identifying a set of strategies to help reach their goals and outcomes through the Kingmakers of Oakland Theory of Action
  • Prepare and facilitate large group Learning Collaborative convenings, web meetings, and Technical Assistance meetings
  • Design, coordinate, and execute in-person and virtual individualized convenings with each district team in between large group Learning Collaborative meetings, including monthly meetings with each Learning Collaborative team district liaison
  • Support district team members using the Liberatory Design Framework to shift the way districts look at data, narrative, and evaluation 
  • Support cross-functional, intergenerational district teams as well as each of nine (9) affinity representative areas of each team: Students, Parents, Teachers, Principals, Senior Administrators, Data Analysts, School Board Members, Community Members, and City Officials
  • Partner with the Research, Assessment, & Design  team to support data creation and collection for the Learning Collaborative
  • Facilitate team meetings as needed
  • Attend weekly, monthly, quarterly meetings and retreats  as scheduled
  • Additional duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Mission alignment as it relates to engaging, encouraging, and empowering youth of color and towards systemic change in education
  • Demonstrate experience leading DEI and/or Racial Equity & Healing within public school systems, grades K-12
  • Experience understanding systemic operations within a public school central office
  • Demonstrate deep understanding of systemic racial inequity within the US school system
  • Familiarity with Targeted Universalism and Liberatory Design Frameworks
  • Comfort with ambiguity and ability to successfully navigate within a young start-up nonprofit environment
  • Communicate and articulate verbally and in writing at an exceptional level
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all levels of staff, outside agencies, youth, parents, the public, and Board members
  • Proficiency with standard office software programs including GSuite, Microsoft Office, Zoom and video conferencing, and a variety of web-based platforms
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and respect for a diverse population
  • Work independently with little direction
  • Willingness to take responsibility for ensuring completion of work across diverse and collaborative teams
  • Understand and work within the scope of authority
  • Complete work accurately despite many interruptions
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple simultaneous responsibilities
