Associate Director for Membership and Communications (part time)--Massachusetts Coalition for Suicide Prevention

Position Overview: 

The Massachusetts Coalition for Suicide Prevention (MCSP) is seeking a part time (~20-25 hours/week) Associate Director to focus on recruiting and retaining members, engaging volunteers, making community connections, building partnerships, and drafting and coordinating communications, including effective outreach materials. The position is remote, however, outreach to a wide range of communities and organizations (including possible in-person meetings) will be an essential part of the work.

 

About the MCSP:

The MCSP is a collaborative coalition of a diverse array of partners who work together to reduce suicide and promote mental wellness in Massachusetts through statewide collaboration, education, and advocacy.

The MCSP is comprised of organizations and individuals interested in the spectrum of suicide prevention activities from upstream mental health education through crisis intervention and postvention. The MCSP is a leading voice in Massachusetts for statewide suicide prevention awareness, education and advocacy, including advocating for continued State funding through the Commonwealth’s suicide prevention line item. The MCSP oversees and funds the 10 regional suicide prevention coalitions, which cover the vast majority of towns in Massachusetts. The MCSP is funded by the Commonwealth through a dedicated line item in the state budget and by organizational and individual member dues. The MCSP works closely with and is accountable to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s Suicide Prevention Program. The MCSP employs a Managing Director and engages consultants for government relations, public relations and marketing, and fiscal management. 

 

About the Associate Director Position: 

In the interest of increasing capacity and broadening in-house expertise, the MCSP seeks an individual to identify, engage, and provide opportunities for interested stakeholders to become more involved in the work of the MCSP and to implement communications that support the MCSP’s programmatic efforts. 

 

Duties:

Tasks assigned to this position generally include collaboration with the Managing Director, paid consultants (e.g., media consultants), and Coalition volunteers and leaders.

A. Member Recruitment 

·       Create, update, and disseminate membership materials

·       Identify potential new members and conduct recruitment activities

·       Coordinate the annual membership campaign

·       Ensure that membership renewals are sent and processed via our fiscal agent

·       Follow up with any non-renewed members

·       Maintain and update the MCSP member database

·       Work with volunteers interested in membership development

B. Constituent Engagement 

  • Develop and implement community and member engagement strategies to increase meaningful participation in the Coalition’s activities and committees
  • Compile and present information that provides guidance to Coalition leaders and volunteers, such as a Member and Volunteer Engagement Toolkit
  • Broaden the Coalition’s constituency by identifying unrepresented or under-represented types of stakeholders among Coalition participants, then cultivating and managing strategic partnerships with organizations that fill these gaps
  • Establish mutually-beneficial partnerships with organizations that serve communities of color, LGBTQ communities, religious minorities, and other historically-oppressed and excluded groups
  • Build the Coalition’s capacity and volunteer workforce by recruiting, engaging, training, and supporting potential leaders, and by helping the Coalition develop pathways to leadership
  • Assist regional coalitions and other stakeholders in recruiting and engaging other individuals and organizations to the table
  • Work with volunteers interested in partnership development and relationship management

C. Communications

  • With the Managing Director, create and disseminate effective printed and online communications and promotional materials that clearly articulate the MCSP’s mission, scope of activities, and innovative approaches for a variety of audiences
  • With the Managing Director and media consultants, work to increase the Coalition’s visibility within and outside of suicide prevention circles and to increase awareness of suicide prevention in Massachusetts
  • With the Managing Director and media consultants, create multi-platform campaigns and materials that educate the public and increase engagement in the Coalition 
  • Create educational and promotional materials that can be utilized by the MCSP, regional coalitions, and other stakeholders
  • Work with volunteers interested in communications

 D. Other

  • Additional projects as may be assigned.


Qualifications: 

The ideal candidate will: 

  • have demonstrated experience engaging and sustaining strong community partnerships—both with individuals and organizations—through effective outreach and relationship building. 
  • be able to communicate clearly, develop effective materials and content to promote the Coalition to a variety of stakeholders, engage new members and volunteers, and facilitate partnerships with community organizations
  • have knowledge of and experience with creating and sustaining community partnerships and effective outreach with a wide variety of stakeholders and communities 
  • be committed to advancing the Coalition’s important work in social justice and racial equity
  • be able to manage, track, and provide updates regarding multiple projects and meet deadline
  • be comfortable with and effective at working independently and collaboratively with staff, consultants, volunteers, and others involved in the MCSP’s work
  • be able to motivate volunteers
  • have excellent verbal and written communication skills, keen attention to detail in all aspects of work including record-keeping, and strong interpersonal skills
  • be able to effectively and enthusiastically represent the MCSP to multiple stakeholders, including but not limited to MCSP general membership, MCSP leaders and other volunteers, existing and potential partners and members, and the public

 

  • Access to a strong, reliable internet connection and to a vehicle for in-state travel is a must. 
  • Knowledge of suicide prevention is preferred, but not necessary.
  • Either a Bachelors’ level degree OR equivalent relevant experience strongly preferred. 

 

Compensation: The hourly rate for this position is $25/hr to $28/hr, depending on experience. Pro-rated paid holidays and time off are included. MCSP reimburses for mileage, tolls, parking, office supplies associated with MCSP work at home, and other relevant out-of-pocket expenses. Part-time positions may be eligible for pro-rated health insurance coverage.
