If you are looking for a rewarding, hands-on opportunity in the nonprofit sector, we are looking for mission focused professionals who are ready to work with purpose and make a positive impact on the lives of local West Virginian youth. We are hiring for two important senior roles that will lead our organic, regenerative farm--the center of all of our youth development programs and associated businesses that support those programs.

About Our Farm

Our farm is located on over 100 acres of what was historically the Lafollette/Frye Farm and is bordered by the Cacapon River with much of the lower field rich in fertile floodplain soils. We are currently growing over 40 different vegetable crops and have over 150 free-range, organic layer chickens. Our farm, and nearly half of the other acreage, has been certified organic since 2019 and we have loyally followed regenerative principles such as crop rotation, soil nutrient balancing, and cover-cropping as well as weaving perennial plantings and pollinator-support plots into our annual production areas.

As a nonprofit social enterprise, our farm serves two purposes: 1) to “do-good” and 2) to “make money”. On the “do-good” side, our farm serves as a living classroom teaching local high school students (what we call our “Junior Crew”) organic and regenerative farming techniques as well as how the farm interacts with, and is integrated into, the larger ecosystem. Junior Crew first get their hands dirty in our Lab Garden, where they acquire skills to work together to design, plant and tend a garden. There they learn about soil health, plant physiology and interactions as well as group dynamics in a space created for play and experimentation. They also learn with our farm crew as they grow, cultivate and prepare produce for our market, bakery and CSA customers gaining hands-on, real life experience.

The farm also has to “make money” so we can become self-sustaining (instead of having to constantly fundraise) and so we can continue to fund our youth development mission-focused work. Over the past three years we have focused on building our infrastructure to include two 30’x156’ high tunnels, a 30’x120’ greenhouse for propagation, four caterpillar tunnels, irrigation systems, three standalone walk-in coolers and a 15’x30’ packhouse. We have also been steadily accumulating tools and equipment to increase our efficiency, including a 39hp kubota tractor with a box tiller, disc harrow, plow, brush hog, Tilmor cultivation toolbar and more; a BCS 853 and a BCS 749 with flail mower, power harrow, rotary plow, tiller, compost spreader, crimper and chipper/shredder; as well as numerous hand-tools. Our production is focused on four intensively-managed acres and we are in the process of refining our crop programs, as well as evaluating the potential opportunities of fruit and livestock production to better serve our CSA, markets and other connected enterprises (market, bakery, kitchen, etc..)

All of this infrastructure has been needed so that we can provide for our current enterprises (bakery and garden market) along with preparing for our future enterprises which include the opening of a new 2,000sf state-of-the-art professional kitchen facility that will house our production kitchen, new expanded bakery and farm-connected restaurant. All of these enterprises will rely on the seasonal bounty that the farm provides and careful planning (and some good contingency plans) will help us move to the next level over the next several years. The new bakery will continue cranking out our award winning baked goods and hopefully be able to expand production to more wholesale accounts. The production kitchen will be responsible for a new line of value-added products, more grab-and-go seasonal options (prepared veggies, salads, sandwiches, etc…) and, at some point in late-2022, it will handle food preparation for our farm-connected restaurant.

Farm Manager

The Farm Manager is 100% focused on the farm enterprise through the development and successful execution of the annual production plan. For the first year, the Farm Manager will mainly focus on vegetable production as other farm production and systems are developed (ie. livestock, fruit).

This role also includes, but is not limited to, the following:
