THE POSITION

Hawken School is seeking a credentialed learning specialist to join a collaborative team of teachers and administrators to help deepen our commitment to building a more progressive and differentiated teaching and learning culture. The successful candidate will serve as a member of the Support Services team and the Upper School leadership team and interact with a broad range of constituents, including students, faculty, parents/caregivers, and administrators.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage academic referrals for students in grades 9–12
  • Interpret diagnostic assessments and learning evaluations
  • Create, share, and annually review academic and learning support plans
  • Work closely with the Director of the Upper School, Assistant Directors, Dean of Students, Assistant Dean, school psychologists, faculty and advisors to help coordinate a multi-tiered system of support for students
  • Provide one-to-one direct instruction and small-group instruction to students as needed or requested
  • Manage a structured study program for students who need additional academic support or support with executive functioning skills to be successful at Hawken
  • Collaborate with both teachers and students to develop an informed and organized approach to differentiated instruction
  • Support the documentation and sharing of student progress benchmarks
  • Serve on the admissions committee and support the Director of Admission by providing information and expertise related to how we might support prospective students, including whether we have the resources it takes to support prospective students
  • Participate in transition meetings for families between the Middle and Upper School divisions
  • Partner with the School Psychologist to support students, faculty, advisors, and parents in implementing recommendations from student’s neuropsychological evaluations 
  • Schedule and lead parent/caregiver meetings as necessary 
  • Manage student accommodations for school-based testing as well as standardized testing
  • Monitor academic comments and notes to recommend interventions 
  • Coordinate and proctor school-based testing of PSAT, SAT, and ACT (includes some weekend work) 
  • Maintain a list of outside support specialists including tutors, educational therapists, psychologists/psychiatrists, and provide information to families as needed
  • Partner with the Dean of Academic Systems to coordinate the school Testing Center
  • Consult with teachers and administrators to design, align, and implement innovative approaches to instruction in order to support student-centered, forward-focused, and engaging learning experiences
  • Support the school leadership team in identifying, designing, and/or implementing strong and effective professional development opportunities in the areas of learning differences
  • Partner with the school leadership team to lead professional development with a lens of learning support and to lead research and implementation efforts related to mastery-based assessment, project-based learning, literacy, and progressive pedagogy 
  • Develop a curated collection of resources and materials that promote Hawken’s unique and evolving approach to education
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Upper School Director or Head of School

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Certification as a learning/enrichment specialist or equivalent degree/specialization
  • Master’s degree and at least three years teaching experience (preferred)
  • Demonstrated competence and leadership in curriculum development, instruction, and pedagogy
  • Ability to be a systems thinker and play a part in the strengthening of the system that will ensure each student has the support/resources they need to be successful at Hawken
  • Respect for confidentiality in dealing with students who may have a diagnosis
  • Exceptional understanding of the developmental needs of high school learners
  • Joyful enthusiasm for high school learners
  • Flexibility, humility, collegiality, and the motivation to work both independently and as a responsible member of a team
  • Facility with dynamic educational technologies and settings
  • Demonstrated experience working in a diverse community and strong cross-cultural competency skills
  • Willingness and eagerness to assist in the life of the school
  • Ability to identify challenges and draw from a toolbox of varied strategies
  • Familiarity with diverse ways of engaging students over a range of learning styles enhanced by a desire to try new approaches
  • Demonstrated expertise in working on teams that include colleagues, parents, and outside professionals to support students
  • Excellent listening skills and the ability to apply them in dynamic, fast-paced environments
