    CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER

    20 hours per week, flexible schedule; Monday - Friday. Open until filled.

    Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen (DESK) seeks a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to oversee all financial and corporate compliance functions for the organization. This is a part-time leadership position, suited for someone skilled in nonprofit financial management. The CFO works with staff leadership to craft the annual operating budget (~$1.5 million, three program cost centers), produces monthly and quarterly reports to review with senior staff and Board members, directs contracted financial services for all bookkeeping processes, and manages all funding contracts (~10), including quarterly drawdowns. Schedule is flexible and semi-remote work options are available.

    Mission & Background Information

    DESK serves people experiencing homelessness or living in poverty by providing food assistance and services that promote health, community, and equity. We are located in Downtown New Haven, just off the Green, with administrative offices on nearby East Street. DESK is a dynamic organization, having grown from a staff of 2.40 FTE, a budget of $180,000, and less than $50,000 in non-cash assets in 2017, to a staff of 14.60 FTE, a budget of more than $1.5 million, and non-cash assets of over $1 million. Currently, DESK is completing a $4 million capital renovation of our Drop-in & Resource Center. DESK is a diverse and inclusive organization; we eagerly welcome candidates from underrepresented backgrounds.     Core Responsibilities

    • Budgeting – In consultation with the Executive Director, the Board’s Finance Committee, and staff leadership, the CFO develops the annual operating budget, project/contract budgets, and capital budgets.
    • Bookkeeping Oversight – The CFO works with the office administrator and contracted bookkeeping staff (Carter Hayes + Associates) to ensure proper accounting procedures.
    • Reporting – The CFO produces monthly financial reports to help staff manage their respective cost centers, ensure spending stays within budget, ensure revenue development is on pace to meet budget, and provide the tools for appropriate Board-level oversight.
    • Contract Oversight – The CFO works with the contracted bookkeeping staff to produce budgets, quarterly drawdown reports, invoices, and close-outs for contracted projects.
    • Corporate Compliance – The CFO is responsible for ensuring compliance with all municipal, state, and federal regulations, ordinances, and laws pertaining to labor and corporate business functions.
    • IRS Filing & Audits – The CFO completes the agency’s annual filing with the IRS and works with an external, independent auditor to ensure the completion of the agency’s annual audit.
    • Leadership – The CFO serves as part of the staff leadership team, which works with the Board of Directors to oversee general policies and strategic decision-making. It is expected that the CFO will provide sound and ethical business advice to ensure financial solvency while appropriately managing risk.

    Must-haves

    • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA)
    • 5+ years experience providing financial services, with 2+ years in a leadership role and/or in a nonprofit setting
    • Strong understanding of GAAP and how to deploy appropriately in a nonprofit setting
    • Enthusiasm for DESK’s mission

    CompensationStarting annual salary (20 hours/week) will be $31,123 - $36,459, based on experience and background.
