Position Summary:
The Part-Time Music Director will be responsible for the planning, coordination, and execution of music for our blended worship services. This role requires a creative individual with a strong understanding of both traditional and contemporary Christian music styles, excellent leadership and communication skills, and a collaborative spirit to work effectively with the Pastor, worship team, and congregation. This position also has a need for handbell knowledge and familiarity. The Music Director will play a vital role in shaping the musical landscape of our worship experience, fostering an environment where diverse musical expressions can lead our community in meaningful worship.
Responsibilities:
- Worship Planning: Collaborate closely with the Pastor, staff, and worship planning team to develop weekly music selections that thoughtfully integrate traditional hymns and contemporary Christian songs, aligning with the liturgical calendar and sermon themes.
- Music Leadership: Lead and direct the choir (if applicable), instrumentalists, and vocalists, providing musical direction, rehearsal schedules, and necessary resources.
- Recruitment and Development: Recruit, audition, and nurture the musical talents within the congregation, building a cohesive and enthusiastic music ministry team.
- Arrangement and Adaptation: Arrange or adapt existing hymns and contemporary songs as needed to create seamless transitions and a cohesive musical flow within the hybrid worship service.
- Technical Coordination: Work with the sound and media teams to ensure excellent audio quality and visual integration of music during worship services.
- Resource Management: Oversee the church's music library, instruments, and sound equipment, ensuring proper maintenance and recommending necessary upgrades within budgetary constraints.
- Congregational Engagement: Foster a love for music within the congregation, encouraging participation and providing opportunities for musical expression.
- Rehearsals: Plan and lead regular rehearsals for all participating musicians and vocalists.
- Budget Management: Participate in the development and management of the music ministry budget.
- Professional Development: Stay current with trends in both traditional and contemporary worship music and seek opportunities for professional growth.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated proficiency in playing a primary instrument (piano, guitar, etc.) and strong vocal abilities.
- Significant experience leading and directing musical ensembles (choirs, bands, etc.).
- A thorough understanding of both traditional hymnody and contemporary Christian music styles, including arranging and adapting music.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with clergy, staff, and volunteers.
- Proficiency in reading music and understanding musical theory.
- Experience with music software and technology used in worship (e.g., Planning Center, ProPresenter) is a plus.
- A deep personal faith and a commitment to the mission and values of First Christian Church.
- Bachelor's degree in music or a related field (preferred, but equivalent experience will be considered).
Time Commitment:
This is a part-time position, with an anticipated commitment of 10 hours per week, including rehearsals, worship services, and planning meetings. The schedule may vary depending on the needs of the church.
Compensation:
Compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
