At Guide Dogs for the Blind, we rely on the passionate volunteers who donate their time, talents, and hearts. They are a key area of support for our mission of connecting people, dogs, and communities to transform the lives of individuals with visual impairments. As Canine Welfare/Neonatal Volunteer Supervisor at our campus in San Rafael California, you will help identify new volunteer opportunities within our kennels, coordinate initial training, manage volunteer performance, and act as a liaison with our Campus Volunteer team to recruit new volunteers.


What you’ll do:

  • Supervise, teach, and monitor the performance of 100+ departmental volunteers
  • Develop new volunteer roles to assist the department to care for the dogs and provide necessary services
  • Create and maintain volunteer training materials (videos and written)
  • Work closely with department staff to ensure the finest caliber of husbandry, healthcare, environmental enrichment, and behavior modification for the dogs in our care
  • Update and maintain accurate job descriptions for each volunteer role, interview prospective volunteers, and provide information about our roles
  • Mentor and coach staff and volunteers, complete volunteer assessments, and provide ongoing feedback
  • Create volunteer schedules, ensuring appropriate coverage for department and program needs are met
  • Promote retention of volunteers through ongoing recognition, activities, feedback, and communication

The qualifications you’ll need:

  • 2+ years of experience in coordinating and supervising staff/volunteers preferred
  • Ability to communicate skillfully and effectively with a diverse staff, volunteers, and community in a professional manner at all times
  • Ability to identify the most effective management style for each volunteer and adjust accordingly to achieve the best outcome
  • Strong organizational and planning skills with a demonstrated ability to lead and manage change
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications; Salesforce experience a plus
  • Certification in Volunteer Administration preferred
  • Ability to work 1-2 weekends per month
