MEND is a hunger relief network that supports and strengthens 22 food pantries located throughout Essex County, and extends food access beyond the pantries through mobile markets and home deliveries. MEND’s mission is to alleviate hunger by providing fresh and healthy food, funds, volunteers, and a collaborative forum for member pantries, so that they may share ideas and resources, and make a greater impact on the communities they serve. A 501(c)(3) organization, MEND also advocates for policies to eliminate food insecurity and to improve the lives of patrons.

Over the last three years, MEND has added six member pantries to its growing network, designed and implemented MEND on the Move, a new program, and expanded its fresh food sourcing significantly to respond to the growing needs of the Essex County community. Along with this programming growth, MEND has grown from one to five employees, and increased its annual revenue from $240K to now $1.1M.

MEND is now seeking to hire an energetic self-starter to join as its first Development and Communications Manager. This position will report to the Executive Director - an experienced fundraiser who is eager to mentor, train, and support this position - and will manage the overall fundraising and communications efforts of the organization.

The Development and Communications Manager will be responsible for supporting the growth and stewardship of individual donors, managing and expanding funding from private foundations, and assisting volunteer committees with the successful execution of two annual fundraising events. This individual will also support the development and implementation of additional fundraising strategies in collaboration with the Executive Director and the Board Development Committee.

Additionally, the Development and Communications Manager will oversee production of all donor-facing communications, including email correspondence, monthly newsletters, annual reports, direct mail campaigns, and other campaign-specific communications and brochures. The Development and Communications Manager will also create and share social media content on behalf of the organization.

  • Cultivate existing relationships with individual donors, and work closely with the Executive director to support overall donor prospecting, cultivation, gift securing, gratitude and donation recognition efforts;
  • Expand additional fundraising strategies, such as corporate giving and community fundraising efforts in collaboration with the Executive Director and Board Development Committee;
  • Assist fundraising event committees with the planning and execution of two annual fundraising events: The Green Bean Gala and 10 Days of 10Ks;
  • Develop collateral for all fundraising events and campaigns, and create and maintain event and campaign-specific websites and/or donation pages;
  • Maintain the donor database and ensure the timely and accurate acknowledgement of all gifts.

Grants and Institutional Support (30%):

  • Develop and monitor grants calendar to ensure that deadlines are met;
  • Research potential grant and corporate funding opportunities;
  • Draft letters of inquiry, proposals, acknowledgement letters, and reports for funders;
  • Work closely with the programming team to ensure the timely and accurate tracking of all grant expenses.

Communications (30%):

  • Manage all aspects of donor-facing organizational communications, including monthly newsletters, annual reports, and direct mail appeals;
  • Work with the Executive Director and Board Communications Committee to create and update presentations, fact sheets, media kits, brochures, and other materials;
  • Maintain organizational website and update content regularly;
  • Create content for and manage organizational social media accounts.

Qualifications

  • Passion for community-driven hunger relief and advocacy efforts, and a belief that all people are entitled to fresh and healthy food;
  • Strong writing skills, with demonstrated experience writing for advocacy and/or persuasive storytelling;
  • Ability to build relationships and work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, Board, staff, community members and partners, volunteers, and donors;
  • Strong technical, computer and software skills, including experience with Bloomerang (or a similar database), Canva and Wordpress;
  • Familiarity with Essex County, NJ, with a preference given to candidates who reside in towns where MEND pantries are located;
