Background

Hudson River Community Sailing (HRCS) is a youth development and community sailing nonprofit founded in 2008. Through our dual mission we develop academic success and leadership in underserved NYC youth, and provide maritime education to the city at large. We work in partnership with public schools to teach STEM and leadership to students through sailing and boatbuilding. HRCS serves the broader community through a Community Sailing school that provides access to the waterfront for New Yorkers of all abilities through a wide range of programs. Last year, we launched an Adaptive program. The two sides of our work support one another, creating a supportive community dedicated to marine access, education, and a sense of belonging. 

Summary 

The Grants Management Associate is a key member of a small, hardworking, and fun staff dedicated to supporting students through a waterfront community of donors, members, and volunteers. They assist the Development and Communications Director with all aspects of fundraising, with a particular focus on grant management.Grant writing experience is preferred, but a strong writer motivated to learn new skills and take on responsibility is encouraged to apply.

The ideal candidate is a strong written and verbal communicator, personable, organized, hardworking, and enjoys fostering relationships. The ideal candidate must be able to work across departments to support the organization’s needs. This position is one that will play a key role in creating a welcoming environment for donors and helping resource a vibrant and growing organization.

This is a full-time, hybrid position. Most of the work will be remote, with one to two days a week in person, depending on the time of year and organization events taking place.

Responsibilities:

The Grants Management Associate works on a three-member Development team. They are primarily responsible for grants management, but must be able to collaborate on all key areas of the department’s work. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: 

Grant Management: 

  • Manages the organization’s portfolio of ~$400,000 in foundation and corporate grants, organizing, tracking, applying, and reporting
  • Researches new grant prospects and reaches out to foundations
  • Writes new proposals and letters of inquiry, keeps track of grant application status in Salesforce.
  • Tracks deliverables and communicates with relevant program directors and managers to ensure clear communication between development and program
  • Works with Development Director to update stock language, liaise with program officers from foundations, and communicate organization’s updates to funders 

General Development and Communications:

  • Drafts external communications, helps to keep Wordpress-based website up to date, and posts to social media 
  • Marketing and corporate sponsorship: works with staff to represent and market different programs, and helps secure and foster corporate relationships
  • Works with student interns, provides office support as needed, especially during the busy sailing season
  • Assists Director of Development with individual donations and events, logging donations, coordinating event logistics for two major fundraisers in May and October
  • Assists with administrative tasks, including maintaining email communication database and CRM database (Salesforce), and maintaining organization’s photo storage database
  • Coordinates events and fundraisers. Works closely with department and event committees to plan and execute two major events

Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong written communication skills, and a close attention to detail. Grant writing experience a plus, but not required
  • Ability to multitask and work in a busy environment and small, non-traditional office, where collaboration and communication are key to success
  • Strong organization skills and database management experience
  • Positive, energetic, and able to motivate others and work with a variety of constituents and stakeholders to advance the organization's mission. Commitment to building diverse and inclusive spaces and to fostering equitable, anti-racist structures
  • Ability to communicate mission and goals of the organization and departments to external and internal stakeholders
  • Organizational skills: able to work independently, follow up on tasks, set timelines, manage projects with multiple players, variables and shared resources
  • Events experience a plus
  • Willingness and availability to work occasional evenings and weekends, around event times
  • Technology and social media experience and acumen. Photography and videography experience a plus
  • Interest in sailing, youth, education, or waterfront sports a plus

Compensation

  • $48,000-$53,000, based on experience.
