Community Organizer

SUMMARY OF PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Organizer will work with immigrant clients and community members who have been impacted by federal and local immigration policies and will support campaigns that lead to better conditions and opportunities for immigrants in New Jersey. These include TPS Permanent Residency on the federal level and Fair and Welcoming Policies and economic relief campaigns on the state level. The Organizer will build and/or expand relationships with clients of AFSC’s legal services project, immigrant communities, allies and state and federal legislators in New Jersey. In partnership with impacted people, the Organizer will develop campaign strategies, materials, plan events and legislative visits, and public actions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: The key responsibilities of the Community Organizer include the following:

1. Build relationships, and regularly communicate with TPS holders, formerly detained clients and other community members who have been impacted by immigration policies.

2. Identify media and other spaces to uplift stories of impacted community members and facilitate their speaking.

3. Conduct leadership training sessions with community members.

4. Organize public actions such as community forums.

5. Play a key role in the organizing and advocacy team, supporting staff and volunteers, and community members in public actions and planning meetings.

6. Schedule and conduct legislative meetings for economic relief and/or Fair and Welcoming Policy on the state level and ensure participation from impacted community members.

7. Schedule legislative visits in Washington DC and at district offices with NJ Member of Congress in support of the TPS campaign.

8. Participate in advocacy and alliance meetings with the Organizing and Advocacy Director.

9. Represent AFSC at coalition meetings and gatherings.

10. Meet regularly with supervisor and participate in staff meetings.

Qualifications:

1. At least 1 year of successful community organizing or policy campaign experience.

2. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in multicultural contexts.

3. Familiarity with current immigration policy issues.

4. Demonstrated ability to build and maintain alliances with other organizations.

5. Demonstrated commitment in developing or supporting immigrant leadership.

6. Good oral and written communication skills.

7. Fluency in written and oral English and Spanish required.

8. Ability to attend evening and weekend meetings virtually, and when it’s safe to do, in person.

9. Ability to communicate effectively and build mutually respectful relationships with co-workers, clients, and the public.

10. Ability to work effectively and comfortably with Quaker principles.

11. Self-motivated, detail oriented, well-organized, able to prioritize assignments and workload. Driver’s license and access to a car preferred.

Benefícios

COMPENSATION: Salary Range 14 ($52,405) – Exempt – Comprehensive medical and hospitalization plan; term life, accident and salary continuation insurances, defined benefit pension plan, plus fringe benefits; participation in unemployment and worker’s compensation and social security.

This is a full-time specific term position subject to grant renewal and with a possibility to extend if more funding is secured.
