Mandela Partners (MP) works in partnership with local residents, family farmers, and community-based businesses to improve health, create wealth, and build assets through food enterprises in under-resourced communities. Our approach is based on a systems model that addresses issues of economic disinvestment, food insecurity, and health inequity, building on local assets to cultivate thriving communities.
Mandela Partners is a non-profit, community development corporation with a 15 year history of working with and in underserved neighborhoods throughout the East Bay. MP has a $2.2MM budget, 12 full-time staff, 4 part-time staff, and an 8-member Board.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
The Executive Director offers a wealth of expertise in executive-level leadership, has experience in the management of teams with diverse backgrounds and skill sets, and a strong capacity to implement systems that support streamlined operations and open communication. Additionally, the Executive Director is expected to have active connections in philanthropy, experience in building a robust individual donor base - including growing high net-wealth donor networks - and an eye for cross-sector partnerships and opportunities.
Since its founding in 2004, MP has guided the development and growth of an alternative, community-driven model that integrates local entrepreneurship, access to healthy foods, and local food procurement. Central to MPs model is programming that uplifts local residents’ capacity to create solutions to neighborhood challenges, and leverages local assets to that aim. MPs Executive Director has a holistic understanding of the intersections of health, wealth, and community development; they are a champion for local economic development strategies created with and by local residents, support local food systems, and build wealth for under-resourced communities of color.
In 2020, in addition to long-standing programming, MP will (1) explore organizational capacity to deepen work in regional food systems, which will require an assessment of logistics & infrastructure needs, the development of a sustainable revenue model, and an analysis of complementary farmer-focused programming needs; and (2) explore deepening partnerships with mixed-used housing developers to create opportunities for below market, accessible commercial space that benefits community entrepreneurs.
Mandela Partners employes a co-directorship model through a leadership team composed of the organization’s Directors - Executive Director, Director of Programs, Director of Finance & Operations, and Director of Fund Development & Innovation. The leadership team shares in decision-making and accountability regarding policies, human resources, programmatic direction, and fiscal oversight.
Fund Development & Fiscal Oversight (30%)
In collaboration with Mandela Partners’ Fund Development & Finance Directors:
- Maximize the long-term financial health of the organization by driving robust budgeting and forecasting, fiduciary oversight, strategies for cultivating a reserve, and grant management and reporting in partnership with the leadership team
- Grow sustainable funding sources for core operating expenses and administrative staff
- Catalyze funding stream diversification
- Build relationships with new local, regional, and national foundations, and strengthening current relationships with foundations to administer deeper financial support and multi-year funded initiatives
- Grow individual and high netwealth donor networks (i.e. donor advised funds, donor drives & individual campaigns, etc)
- Explore corporate giving strategies (i.e. corporate foundations, matching gifts, corporate social responsibility initiatives)
- Diversify target program funding channels (currently food access, agriculture, business development, and job creation); new possibilities include: workforce development, sustainable agriculture, etc
- Support the Development Director in managing and executing Mandela Partners’ Fund Development Plan
- Develop strategies for income generation (i.e consulting, etc), and evaluate opportunities within current social enterprises / ventures
Strategic Goals & Evaluation (30%)
- Support the Leadership Team in executing the organization’s strategic goals to build models and scalable systems that uplift investing in local economies and access to healthy food options; develop complementary language to efficiently communicate MPs multi-faceted approach and the nexus between health and wealth.
- Develop tools that make MPs model accessible to other communities nationwide
- Champion the Equitable Food Oriented Development collaborative; serve as part of the steering committee and executive leadership
- Maintain current and develop new strategic partnerships across sectors that connect community, economy, food access, and urban planning, including but not limited to government, community based organizations, workforce development agencies, non-profit developers, and private industry
- Develop robust systems of program and impact evaluation: delineate program objectives in measurable terms, identify key indicators of success, outline data collection and analysis activities, and connect program objectives to the mission and growth strategy of the organization.
- Ensure that MPs equity lens continues to be the foundation of MPs work, partnerships, and organizations culture
Human Resources & Culture Cultivation (30%)
- Supervise staff all all levels; analyze current human resource management systems and implement improvements as necessary in regards to: hiring, training and development, supervision and evaluation, and ongoing communication.
- Cultivate and steward an organizational culture of respect, trust, and transparency
- Supports the Leadership Team in executing the strategic objectives of the organization, and building systems of accountability among staff members
- Supports the Leadership Team in building and maintaining a positive work environment and ethical practices
- Set and communicate clear and viable professional development goals for staff members
Board Governance (10%)
- Lead quarterly Board meetings and communicate effectively with the Board to provide, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly, make informed decisions, and provide legal & fiduciary oversight
- Provide the Board with a proposed annual budget and quarterly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial position of the organization
- Ensure Board members are fulfilling Board commitments on an annual basis
- Authentic connection to and investment in Mandela Partners history, work, and mission.
- Minimum of 10 years senior level management; 5 years of Executive level management, including experience leading small and/or mid-sized organizations
- Robust experience in fund development; strong and active networks in philanthropy
- Experience with local, state, and federal agencies -- managing grants & executing contracts, fostering relationships with relevant agencies (public health departments, economic development agency, urban planning, etc)
- Action oriented; pragmatic visionary with capacity to develop strategic goals and clear clear and actionable plan to execute those goals
- Past experience on the ground program / project implementation and community organizing experience a plus
- Connection or experience in alternative capital systems (CDFIs, Mission Investment, PRIs, New Market Tax Credits, etc) and/or private industry experience preferred
- Understanding of or experience in urban planning ideal
- Bilingual - Spanish, Arabic, Cantonese, or Vietnamese - preferred but not required
