Vice President for Equity and Inclusion

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities is a high-caliber strategic policy institute that informs and shapes public policies to reduce poverty, promote equity, and build opportunity. It has a national reputation for conducting rigorous research and analysis, developing evidence-based policy ideas and strategies, shaping a broad array of policy debates at the federal and state levels, and influencing policy outcomes on a range of critical issues. It focuses on improving the lives of people with low or moderate incomes and examines how policies affect particular groups, including Black, Indigenous, and other people of color, immigrants, people with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ people. The Center is known for its unique capacity to blend rigorous, timely analysis with effective communications that enable policymakers and the media to make use of its work.

Over the last four years, the Center has undertaken an organization-wide initiative to advance equity and inclusion in our internal operations and relationships, policy analysis, and work with external partners. The Center seeks a Vice President for Equity and Inclusion to provide strategic and innovative leadership to advance the organization’s efforts to create an equitable and inclusive organizational culture, develop internal policies and practices that center equity, and deepen and develop staff learning and capacity around equity and inclusion.

Responsibilities

  • Establishes the vision for and drives the organization’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) work
  • Leads internal change efforts to create a climate, internal policies, and organizational practices that are equitable and inclusive
  • Facilitates open, sometimes difficult conversations, with diverse constituencies across the Center
  • Moves ideas for major initiatives from conception to implementation, uses metrics to track progress and adjust course when needed, and drives accountability toward shared goals
  • Leads the implementation of staff-wide learning and training on equity and inclusion
  • Leads and manages the work of the Equity and Inclusion working group and outside consultants
  • Consults, coaches, and coordinates with various internal stakeholders, including program and operations teams, affinity groups, Union board, etc. to support E&I strengthening and ownership throughout the organization
  • Serves as advisor to the President and sits on the Executive Management Committee (EMC) and Leadership team
  • Consults as needed with staff on ensuring equity is centered in public-facing documents, policy work, external partnerships, and substantive output

Qualifications

A successful candidate must have an outstanding record managing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work and serving in a leadership capacity within a high-performing organization. Effective candidates will have a broad mix of knowledge, skills, and experience including:

Demonstrated experience leading change management processes that advance equity and inclusion
  • Possesses the imagination and forethought to envision organizational changes
  • Strategic thinker, planner, and evaluator
  • Creative problem-solver, seeks new opportunities, generates innovative ideas, programs, and solutions
  • Demonstrated track record of challenging and influencing peers to approach all work with an equity lens
  • Creates processes that foster buy-in and uptake across an organization, managing feedback at all levels
  • Ability to engage employees and senior leadership to shift the organizational culture and to develop and monitor indicators of organizational culture
  • Minimum ten years’ relevant leadership experience with three to five years focused on leading organization-wide DEI work
Deep experience in DEI
  • Deep knowledge and sensitivity to DEI in all forms and its intersectional nature
  • Understanding of historic and structural barriers to the advancement of diverse people and communities and how these factors can manifest in the workplace
  • Deep content knowledge of the diversity, equity, and inclusiveness research base and best practices for organizations striving to become more diverse, equitable, and inclusive
  • Ability or experience in creating a process to support staff when traumatic events occur
  • A commitment to the Center’s mission to improve the well-being of low- and moderate-income people and advance racial equity
Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills
  • Keen emotional intelligence and deep empathy
  • Ability to remain solution-focused and respectful in all interactions with staff
  • Proven track record of successfully collaborating and building consensus with diverse constituencies
  • Ability to engage with diverse staff and leadership to develop and manage productive relationships that promote trust, collaboration, and partnership between departments and levels of leadership
  • Deep respect for the lived experiences and perspectives of others
  • Experience resolving disagreements and addressing harm
Excellent team and project management abilities
  • Highly collaborative and transparent work and management style
  • Proven track record of moving ideas into action
  • Excellent people management skills – able to garner support, delegate work, and guide staff across the organization, knows how to wield soft power
  • Exceptional leadership skills including decisiveness, integrity, team building, problem solving, coaching/mentoring, and the ability to motivate others

While not required, the following additional qualifications are desirable:

  • Experience in a non-profit, mission-driven organization
  • Experience working collaboratively with unionized staff
  • Familiarity with the role of public policy in dismantling or upholding inequality


This position is in the Center's Washington D.C. office. While we are currently operating virtually during the pandemic, we are developing policies to support a return to in-office work that may include both telework and in-person work. This position will be subject to those policies. This is not a remote position.


This position reports to the Chief Operating Officer.

Terms of Employment: Full-time, exempt

Bargaining Unit Status: This is not a bargaining unit position.


Compensation

Salary commensurate with experience, excellent benefits (including health insurance, vision and dental coverage, life and long-term disability insurance, retirement, MERP, and DCAP), and generous vacation, sick leave, and holiday schedules.
