THE ROLE

Your role stands at the intersection of youth organizing and the effort to make positive change in educational equity and racial justice in Memphis. As a key member of Stand’s Memphis team at a moment of tremendous need and opportunity, you will be responsible for working with the Youth Justice for Action Council to develop their inherent power, connecting communities together, and leveraging that collective power for change using a team organizing leadership model. The Organizer will be responsible for identifying, coaching, and training youth and building engaged teams committed to taking local, district, and state action in support of improving education in their community; developing the leadership skills of members; and initiating and leading campaigns in order to advocate for better outcomes for students. This is a temporary, fulltime position lasting up to 1 year. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supporting the Youth Justice for Action Council to build a diverse and highly skilled base of youth supporters and volunteers

·      Convene and support the Youth Justice Action Council, provide leadership development and facilitate their decision-making process as they determine the Youth Justice Campaign’s overall direction, strategy, and activities

·      Supervise and facilitate justice-impacted and justice-interested high school students at weekly meetings in the afternoons/evenings to ensure the success of the Youth Justice Action Council

·      Coordinate logistics and outreach to ensure the success of the YJAC’s goals, including but not limited to organizing and advocacy efforts

·      Develop a pipeline, identify and recruit supporters in the community. Use face-to-face meetings to build relationships, strengthen communities and recruit volunteers and leaders

·      Support and cultivate the inherent power individuals have and connect them to each other so they can leverage their collective power to bring change in their communities through strategic electoral and issue campaigns

·      Make weekly calls

·      Help develop and maintain required relationships with community leaders, school liaisons, and principals, to build strong coalitions that can work with volunteer teams to create meaningful change in their community

·      Deliver trainings and facilitate workshops that develop individual power, and strengthen collective action for change

Engage and develop leaders and members

·      Build and maintain a group of volunteer leaders and team members, organized into norming and performing teams who are engaged and active

o  Develop, coach and support potential leaders and leaders through:

o  One-on-one coaching

o  Debriefing what worked/didn’t and lessons learned

o  Skill-building with role-playing and practice

o  Work with volunteer leadership to set goals around team growth, action, and engagement, coaching them to successfully meet those goals

o  Communicate regularly with youth participants, including staff check-ins with youth each semester, and with parents/guardians as necessary, to maintain positive group dynamics and high levels of participation


Activate leaders and members to grow teams and win campaigns

·      Support and maintain an organized leadership of 2+ Leaders and/or Fellows to expand membership base through volunteer teams that are in the norming phase to strategically engage in campaigns aimed at improving educational outcomes for students

·      Coach youth volunteer leaders to help identify other potential leaders

·      Coach youth volunteer leaders to ensure a majority of all team members are taking regular action and that members are presented opportunities to remain engaged for multiple campaigns

·      Identify and coordinate resources that provide students with issue-specific opportunities, ideas, research and access to leaders at the local level to achieve program success



QUALIFICATIONS:

·      Passionate commitment to Stand for Children’s mission

·      A minimum of 1-2-years paid organizing with experience in team building, volunteer leadership development and/or volunteer management

·      Experience working with diverse and bilingual communities

·      Commitment to youth-led social change and conviction that as leaders youth can contribute meaningfully to their community

·      Proven ability to achieve measurable, meaningful results in a fast-paced environment

·      Passion for developing people to realize their potential as a leader in improving education for children; including experience delivering presentations and facilitating pre-designed curriculum

·      Strong interpersonal, communication, and team-building skills; ability to initiate, foster, and leverage contacts and networks to achieve strong, positive outcomes

·      Ability to be flexible and steadfast in the face of ambiguity; self-motivated problem-solver and critical thinker

·      Willingness to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends; full-time access to a car and willing to travel locally

·      Ability to be in multiple locations in the course of a given day, the ability to transport items, and the ability to set up and take down meeting equipment (chairs, tables, projectors, screens, etc.); may require the ability to climb stairs
