Descrição

The Mutual Aid coordinator (hotline/training) will oversee Met Council’s direct service programs, including the well-known Tenant Help Hotline, Walk-in Clinic, and Know Your Rights Trainings. The program coordinator's objective is to empower New York City Tenants and volunteers by providing essential information about asserting their rights and engaging them in the advocacy and organizing work of Met Council.

Classification:  Full-time - Hybrid

Responsibilities:

Manage the volunteer-run Tenant Help Hotline:

  • Provide ongoing training and evaluation to volunteers in the area of tenant’s rights and housing laws
  • Create and edit content for the “Questions and Answers” section of the website
  • Maintain database of hotline callers and produce reports
  • Update hotline form as needed.
  • Collaborate hotline outreach materials such as flyers 
  • Create documents to keep volunteers up to date, including the referral sheet
  • Ensure excellent caller experience by providing accurate & helpful information and good customer service
  • Offer callers the opportunity to get involved with Met Council and the housing movement.
  • Troubleshoot basic computer and phone problems.



Recruit and Train Members and Volunteers to be tenant advocates and leaders:

  • Recruit, train, and supervise diverse and multi-lingual volunteers to staff the hotline
  • 4 people on a shift, one of which is Spanish speaker
  • Recruit Spanish-speaking volunteers and promote the hotline in Spanish language media 
  • Increasing Spanish calls to 15%
  • Engage members and volunteers in the organizing and advocacy work of Met Council by identifying leadership development opportunities.
  • Conduct relational meetings with potential members and volunteers
  • Once monthly hotline pieces of training



Manage the Tuesday night Walk-in Clinic:

  • Attend the clinic and help find locations
  • Ensure coverage for each clinic day
  • Keep a positive relationship with the clinic host
  • Make sure flyers are up to date 
  • Ask for donations
  • Make sure sign-up and notes are taken
  • Close up clinic
  • Finding locations and maintaining the relationship with hosts.




Conducting Know Your Rights Training:

  • Create and maintain training curriculum and materials
  • Conduct one training per month for the general public and one per month in conjunction with a community organization
  • Find community partners to do training 


Media Relationships: 

  • Join the Radio show every other month
  • Answer press inquiries about the hotline.


Other responsibilities as deemed necessary


Experience:

  • Recruiting and managing volunteers
  • Conducting training, teaching, and public speaking
  • Organizing and leadership development
  • Experience in the field of Housing, Homelessness or Tenant Rights a plus
  • Bi-lingual (eng/ spn) a plus

At least three to four evenings per week and occasional weekends
