About Damien’s Food Pantry

Located in Southeastern Massachusetts, Damien’s Food Pantry is a nonprofit organization serving households in the Bristol, Plymouth, and Barnstable counties by providing food to people experiencing food insecurity, promoting education and hunger awareness in our community, and providing information to guests regarding other community resources. Welcoming people of every age, race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, ability, marital status, sexual orientation, or any status, including housed status, without discrimination. About the Role & Opportunity 

We seek an energized, community-oriented individual to fill the position of Executive Director. The ideal candidate is passionate about food security, poverty, and community. They have a background in leading nonprofits, ideally around food security. They understand the social systems perpetuating hunger in our community and the greater state of Massachusetts. The ideal candidate will succeed in fundraising experience that includes activating government, individual, and philanthropic funders.

As the leader of a growing organization, the Executive Director plays many roles to support the growth and direction of the organization. These roles include fundraising, volunteer stewardship, strategic planning, fostering community relations, and working with the Board of Directors and other stakeholders to determine the organization's future.

Core Responsibilities

Fundraising/Funding (50%)

  • Develop and implement (with the Board) a fundraising program that meets the goals established for the organization.
  • Identify, solicit, cultivate, and steward donors and donor prospects, including businesses, foundations, and individuals.
  • Manage, seek out, and write grants for operational and program support and/or community partnership opportunities.
  • Remain informed about current and developing trends related to the organization's mission, legal standards, fundraising strategies, community issues/needs, and state/federal legislation funding. 
  • Maintain and create effective relationships in the community and act as the principal spokesperson for the organization to promote Damien's positive image. 
  • Pursue and incorporate new revenue sources through a variety of fundraising mechanisms.
  • Oversee the maintenance of database records and files, mailing lists, donor/gift information, and pantry member visitation while ensuring that reporting mechanisms are in place. 

Operational (30%)

  • Responsible for operations and management of the food pantry and programs, including the following: risk management, accounting, and cash management systems, financial and program operations, and appropriate personnel policies and systems for staffing (including volunteers)
  • Supervise the Pantry Warehouse Manager
  • Supervise the volunteer program with the volunteer coordinator.
  • Prepare and administer the annual budget for Board approval
  • Negotiate and ensure compliance with organizational contracts
  • Work with contractors to manage the overall operation of the organization’s facilities and equipment
  • Oversee accounting with outside vendor support and work with the Finance Committee to ensure timely annual filings; coordinate with vendor to complete annual audit 

Strategic Leadership (20%)

  • Work with the Board and volunteers to develop and implement policies, procedures, and strategic plans to achieve the organization's philosophy, mission, and goals.
  • Work with the Board and volunteers to develop and implement policies, procedures, and strategic plans.
  • Cultivate and maintain a collegial working relationship with volunteers and the Board and develop appropriate protocols for dialogue and communication to ensure the Board has a good knowledge of the organization. Will report to the Executive Committee regularly
  • Through professional peer contacts, conference attendance, etc., stay informed of trends, issues, events, and developments in providing for food security.

Required Experience for this Role

  • Experience working in a nonprofit environment and with a Board; a certain number of years isn’t required. We’re more focused on impact.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking skills
  • A strong decision-maker who can quickly act based on the organization’s values and priorities 
  • Ability to adapt communication styles for diverse audiences: donors, staff, volunteers, and the Board
  • Strong collaboration skills, including the ability to seek and engage in mutually beneficial collaborations or partnerships 
  • Tech-savvy with an ability to quickly learn new software 
  • Proven experience in a management position
  • Ability to relate to a population of varying socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds
  • Ability to delegate tasks and responsibilities and to adequately review and assess performance
  • Demonstrates excellence in organizational, managerial, communication, and leadership skills
  • Demonstrates ability to work independently with a high level of personal accountability
  • Well-organized with good attention to detail

A Typical Day

As Executive Director, your typical day will be dynamic and multifaceted. You'll collaborate with volunteer program teams to set priorities, engage with stakeholders to grow our existing programming, participate in strategic planning sessions with the Board of Directors, and address operational and personnel issues. Your day will be marked by problem-solving, hands-on leadership, and a commitment to supporting Damien’s Pantry. 

Working at Damien’s Pantry

This is a full-time, onsite position located in Wareham, MA. The organization has just opened a new center and community garden, making this an exciting time to join for someone energetic and interested in solving interesting and varied challenges while quickly growing one’s skill set with on-the-job learning. They’ll also have the chance to enhance community outreach with programming like monthly nutritional conferences. The salary for this position is between $80 and $100k/year.  We also offer a benefit package.
