Project Manager, Global Cryptocurrency Facilities Tracker

Position

Global Energy Monitor is seeking an experienced climate and energy research analyst for our new Global Cryptocurrency Facilities Tracker.

The Challenge

According to the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), we have less than a decade to make massive and unprecedented changes in the global economy to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. To meet that challenge, Global Energy Monitor is creating trackers and other tools to provide detailed information on energy facilities, sponsors, and financing.

Global Energy Monitor (GEM) is a network of researchers developing information for the worldwide climate and clean energy movement. Since the organization’s founding in 2007, GEM’s research has become an essential tool for activists, journalists, policymakers, and scientists. GEM’s data and reports are used and cited by organizations ranging from Greenpeace to The Wall Street Journal. GEM’s information is used by Bloomberg Terminals, the International Energy Agency, the IPCC, Climate Analytics, Carbon Tracker Initiative, and hundreds of others.

Note: GEM does not have a central office; instead, GEM works with employees to create suitable home offices catered to the needs of their role. Remote staff need not be based in the United States. 

Position Summary and Duties

The Project Manager position includes the following areas of responsibility.

• Locating and documenting the characteristics and status of existing and proposed cryptocurrency facilities in media reports, financial and environmental filings, and other sources.
• Assessing the fossil fuel footprint of cryptocurrency facilities.
• Creating, formatting, and updating wiki pages on cryptocurrency facilities on the GEM.wiki platform, as shown here: https://www.gem.wiki/Category:Cryptocurrency
• Developing reports and analyses based on GEM’s data.
• Providing support for other Global Energy Monitor projects, including administrative tasks, as needed.
• Writing blogs, articles, and reports summarizing research findings.
• Creating visual presentations of findings using presentation graphics and online tools.
• Analyzing and staying abreast of industry, NGO, media, and governmental data and reports to assess current and emerging trends.
• Representing research findings at meetings, conferences, hearings, and other public events.
• Assisting third-party researchers in academia, NGOs, governments, and business organizations seeking to use GEM data and analysis.
• Providing miscellaneous editorial support for GEM publications, such as proofreading, data preparation, and development of figures and charts.

Education & Experience

The following experience and skills are required for this position:

• 5+ years of experience in energy/environmental research and analysis.
• Professional-level writing skills.
• Strong investigative research skills.
• Analytical skills, including experience in summarizing and presenting data.
• Passion for data maintenance and organization.
• Demonstrated ability to master new technical skills as needed for data development and analysis.
• Attention to detail, scrupulous adherence to documented facts, and resourcefulness in using online search tools.
• Strong proficiency with spreadsheets, including google sheets and excel.
• Demonstrated interest and engagement with environmental movements and/or social and environmental justice.
• Expert knowledge of environmental and social impacts of fossil energy production, governmental and business institutional structures, and the global political context of energy.
• Familiarity with researching financial and environmental filings and records.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a remote work setting.
• Fluency in English.

The following experience and skills are desired for this position:

• Knowledge of wiki formatting.
• Fluency in Chinese.
