About the Religious of Jesus and Mary

The Religious of Jesus and Mary (RJM) is an international congregation of Catholic sisters who have shared the Church’s mission in the United States since 1877.

Committed to the apostolic call and style of St. Claudine Thévenet, who founded the Congregation in 1818, we serve in various educational, pastoral, social and spiritual ministries, through which we make known God’s goodness and forgiving love, as revealed in the hearts of Jesus and Mary.

The RJM-USA province currently serves in ministries across the United States, as well as in Haiti.


About the Role

The Director of Development (DOD) is responsible for bringing both structure and imagination to RJM’s fundraising and communications activities. The DOD is a leadership opportunity that challenges candidates to increase RJM’s sophistication in development and communications in order to maintain its private philanthropic revenue while also expanding and engaging our community of supporters.

The DOD will be RJM’s lead fundraising strategist and project manager. The DOD position is both strategic and tactical and is responsible for designing, managing, and executing the annual development. The ideal candidate has a clear grasp of all core components of both institutional and individual fundraising, with particularly strong experience in individual giving, including direct mail giving campaigns, recurring giving, and donor stewardship. This role requires experience with development operations, including CRM management and gift processing.

The DOD will also work closely with RJM sisters in Washington, DC, Haiti, and across the Province on communications, bringing new strategy, structure, and charm to the organization’s storytelling. The DODC will be responsible for elevating the quality of our editorial calendar in such a way that reflects both industry best practices and RJM’s unique values, impact, and interests.

This role is a full-time position working from our Washington, DC office (as public health conditions allow), with some travel required. The DOD can expect her/his/their work to include:

Strategy and Leadership

  • Contribute positively to overall organizational climate and affirm RJM’s values
  • Work closely with the RJM Provincial Leadership to establish and monitor annual and long-term revenue goals and budgets 
  • Participate in long-term strategic planning for RJM to ensure development plans align with evolving and freshly articulated organizational goals and partnerships
  • Update annual development plan to accomplish organizational goals as they evolve
  • Think creatively about the donor stewardship plan and update it on an annual basis
  • Update and revise RJM’s overarching case for support in response to real-time needs


Donor Appeals and Relationships

  • Execute and evaluate the fundraising strategies articulated in RJM’s current development plan, with special emphasis on increasing donations through the Haiti Mission Newsletter, RJM’s most important fundraising vehicle
  • Collaborate with and provide guidance to the Sisters in Haiti on content creation for the Haiti Mission Newsletter to elevate the interest of fundraising messages
  • Collaborate with and provide guidance to the Sisters in Haiti on donor and funder relationship management, ensuring the Sisters feel well supported in cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding their direct connections
  • Serve as point of contact for and develop deeper relationships with RJM’s US-based donors
  • Serve as the lead point of contact for all QUEST alumni, ensuring their continued connection to RJM
  • Design, launch, and manage new recurring and planned giving programs.


Communications and Fundraising Operations

  • Better manage and promote the “News” section of RJM’s website
  • Evaluate if, when, and where RJM should launch a social media presence
  •  Design and execute offline communication touchpoints as a different way to stay connected with the community
  • Manage and maintain the accuracy and integrity of all donor and donation data in CiviCRM, RJM’s current CRM solution
  • Manage all online and offline gift processing
  • Ensure accounting has the information needed for bookkeeping
  • Serve as primary point of contact for website and CiviCRM needs and improvements


How You Know This is the Right Job for You

Prior Experience

  • Seasoned professional with at least 6-8 years of nonprofit development experience
  • Demonstrable experience working in individual giving with particular experience in direct mail, online fundraising, major gifts, recurring giving, and planned giving
  • Experience managing and improving development systems and operations, ranging from CRM management to budget monitoring to gift processing
  • Excellent working knowledge of development CRMs (CiviCRM experience is a plus) and revenue management

  • Superb verbal and written communication skills, with experience tailoring messages to suit intended audiences and compelling readers to act
  • A born project manager able to work backward from a deadline to create a plan Ability to analyze and use data and metrics to shape goals, strategies, and tactics
  • Experience working with volunteers of all levels
  • Enthusiasm to propose fresh ideas without prompting by leadership, openness to feedback on those ideas, and a persistence to bring those ideas to life
  • A natural relationship builder
  • A reliable and friendly communicator who reaches out and follows up
  • A stickler for details and quality
  • A caretaker of sensitive information about donors, board members, RJM’s constituents, etc.
  • A strong self-motivator
  •  A creative thinker willing to test out new ideas


About Compensation and Benefits

  • This role will receive an annual salary between $85,000-$100,000
  • RJM offers an annual QSHERA allowance for healthcare, plus other benefits negotiable
  • Vacation and sick leave, and 10 national holidays observed
