Founded in 1883, Allen-Stevenson is a K-8 independent school for boys with an enrollment of just under 400 students. Located in the heart of New York City’s Upper East Side, the School is a joyful, inclusive community. 

The History department seeks a dedicated, dynamic, and experienced middle school level teacher. The ideal candidate genuinely enjoys early adolescents and understands this age group and their developmental needs. Successful candidates will use creative and innovative teaching practices, engaging curious and active boys who thrive on imaginative and versatile pedagogy. Under the direction of the Head of Upper Division and the History Department Chair, this middle school history teacher will be responsible for planning and implementing lessons that cover both the content and skills of the Upper Division (Grades 5-8) history curriculum. Qualified candidates will be able to create and provide an environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of adolescents to ensure success for each student as well as monitor and evaluate academic outcomes. All Allen-Stevenson teachers are expected to communicate and interact with students, parents, staff, and the community in a manner that represents the mission and core values of the School. Additionally, the history teacher must possess an enthusiastic commitment to the importance of building and sustaining a diverse, just, inclusive, and equitable academic environment.

This full-time position starts in September 2022 and is eligible for a complete benefits package.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

●      Plan and implement lessons that meet the content and skills-related goals and objectives of the history curriculum

●      Collaborate with colleagues around best practices in the classroom

●      Develop, select and modify instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students

●      Ensure the classroom, lessons and materials foster diversity, inclusion and belonging

●      Assess students to evaluate their abilities, strengths and weaknesses

●      Foster a classroom environment that provides for student involvement in the learning process and enables each student to achieve learning objectives

●      Establish and guide the learning process toward curricular goals, and clearly communicate these objectives to students for all lessons, units, projects 

●      Maintain a positive, and fair classroom environment for all students

●      Collaborate with the history department and the grade level team to support both curricular goals as well as the social, emotional, and academic well-being of students

●      Establish effective communications and relationships with students and parents

●      Exhibit a growth mindset about teaching practices and works toward professional goals and development

●      Attend faculty meetings and serve on committees

●      Provide effective supervision of students to promote a safe and healthy environment and school experience

●      Supervise students outside of the classroom - for example, during lunch or electives

●      Complete required reports and tasks punctually and professionally

●      Perform other duties as required

Qualification Requirements

The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

●      Master’s Degree

●      Minimum of 3 years teaching experience within the content area

●      Ability to plan and implement effective lessons to engage middle school students

●      Ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of a diverse student body

●      Effective use of formative and summative evaluation to meet the needs of each student.

●      Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education

●      Ability to infuse technology into curriculum

●      Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, students, parents and community

●      Excellent oral and written communication and human relation skills
