    Finance Director

    Reports To: Executive Director

    Freedom, Inc. (FI) is a queer feminist non-profit that organizes within low to no-income Black and Southeast Asian women and girls, gay, lesbian, transgender, intersex, and other queer folx. Our mission is to achieve social justice through the coupling of direct services with community organizing. Through leadership development, community mobilization, and advancing community control measures, we will bring about social, political, cultural, and economic change, resulting in the end of violence against women, gender-non-conforming folks and youth within our communities. Freedom, Inc. works to dismantle the root causes of violence, poverty, racism and discrimination. Our belief is that people who are most affected by these issues must have voice, power, resources and choice, in order for true social change to happen.

    Job Summary:

    The Finance Director’s primary responsibility is ensuring the effective and efficient financial, administrative, and operational functions of Freedom, Inc. As a member of the executive team, this position plays a critical role in the financial decision-making, strategic planning and operations of the organization as it continues to enhance its quality programming, movement organizing, and capacity building.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Financial Planning and Analysis: Develop and implement financial strategies and plans to support the organization's goals
    • Financial Management: Oversee day-to-day financial operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger
    • Compliance and Risk Management: Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local financial regulations and reporting requirements for nonprofits; Establish and execute internal controls to protect the organization's assets and reduce financial risks
    • Grant Management: Monitor grant spending to ensure that resources are being utilized efficiently and for their intended purposes; Reconcile the budget versus the actual expenditures for restricted grants
    • Leadership and Communication: Collaborate with program and development staff to align financial resources with programmatic goals; Regularly hold meetings with Department Heads, Executive Team, & Board of Directors to share updates, assess department budgets, and prepare for upcoming events or objectives
    • Administration and Operations: Oversee payroll process by working with the Operations Director and PEO to confirm accurate processing of payroll and timely reporting according to IRS rules and regulations; Responsible for maintaining the organization's financial software and file management systems, along with the associated billing, contracts, and accounts
    • Outreach/Movement Building: Create grassroots power in our communities through programming, community events, actions, mutual aid, canvassing, and phone banking.
    • Directly Supervises: Accounting Assistant, Finance Associate, Lead Grant Accountant

    A Successful Candidate will have:

    • A passion for the FI’s mission and demonstrated commitment to addressing issues facing the SEA and Black community
    • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field; CPA or MBA preferred.
    • Minimum of 5 years of experience in nonprofit management.
    • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, financial regulations, and compliance requirements.
    • Proficiency in QuickBooks Online or similar accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a finance team effectively.
    • High degree of accuracy & attention to detail
    • Proficiency in CRMs and other web-based applications like Basecamp and Zoom
    • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and produce high quality, work under tight deadlines
    • Excellent organization and time management skills; proven ability to meet deadlines
    • Must be able to communicate in healthy, transformative, professional and direct way with clients, peers and FI Leaders
    • Ability to work interdependently with other Operations & Development staff
    • Understanding of patriarchy, capitalism, anti-blackness, white supremacy and queer/trans phobia
    • Understanding of gender/racial/Queer justice and be comfortable working with multi-generations of folx who identity as LGBTQI
