    Position Description: The National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) seeks a Director of Finance and Operations responsible for managing the association's financial, operations and human resources functions. Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Director of Finance and Operations will have the following duties:

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    Financial Management

    • Provide leadership, management and support to the finance and operations team to successfully implement NACD’s financial and operational goals in close coordination with COO and management team.
    • Supervise the Finance and Operations Specialist, Staff Accountant and Operations Coordinator, who manages daily operations such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, etc.
    • Responsible for producing the monthly financial statements
    • Manage the year-end closing activities and schedules to comply with independent auditor standards

    Operations

    • Develop and coordinate operational budgets for NACD and monitor to ensure spending occurred as planned and that variances were anticipated, recognized, and corrected
    • Work with Directors to discuss financial management, budget vs actual reports, and timekeeping to monitor progress and identify unknown expenses that might occur
    • Support Annual and Summer Meeting logistics such as event registration set up, hotel reconciliations and onsite support
    • Plan and execute financial operations in accordance with NACD policies, establish operational procedures, and ensure that proper and accurate accounting records are maintained
    • Collaborate with Chief Operating Officer support Finance, Audit and HR committees

    Grant Management

    • Review grant award letters and contracts; terms and conditions of funders; monthly journal entries and review the general ledger
    • Assist Director of Conservation Programs in ensuring compliance with the terms and conditions of grants
    • Monitor life-of-grant reporting requirements and ensure that financial and progress reports (provided by Director of Conservation Programs) are submitted to the agency in a timely manner

    Human Resources

    • Oversee HR tasks including new hires, terminations, benefits, and payroll
    • Work with outside broker to renew insurance programs, including liability, workers’ compensation and health
    • Ensure onboarding process is completed for all new staff

    Skills/Qualifications:

    • 5-7+ years of accounting experience with a minimum of 3-5 years in a nonprofit
    • B.A degree or equivalent work experience
    • Understanding of OMB Uniform Guidance
    • Experience with QuickBooks Desktop
    • Experience maintaining online timekeeping systems (Spring Ahead currently used)
    • Experience in managing and running payroll (Paychex currently used)
    • Proficient with Microsoft Excel and the ability to reconcile large transactional files (pivot tables and vlookup experience preferred)

    Location: This position is based out of the NACD’s headquarters office in Washington, D.C. and reports to the Chief Operating Officer. Currently, NACD is operating on a hybrid working schedule with two days in the office and three days remote. This position would be in the office tentatively Wednesday and Thursday of each week.
